Description Well, after about two months of planning and preparing, here it is- the first Viking-style drinking horn in a run of three.

Wow. Has it been two months, really? Granted, about a month was devoted to carving animal fetishes to cover the tip (these were scrapped because they would need extensive work to salvage- slightly more information available in my journal), and weeks were spent acquiring materials, but it feels strange to finally complete the first prototype.

Yes, this is indeed a prototype. It is my hope to create a second run of these drinking horns over the summer, with different animal carvings. More commission details to come, if anybody shows any interest.

Haha, so after this rant I might as well give those of you patient enough to read this far some project specs: horn is about 14" from mouth to tip and holds roughly 6-8 oz of water (I consider this to be a medium size). The hand grip is real leather secured by lacing in the back. The designs you see were actually carved into the horn before being inked- this is so the ink had a lesser chance of rubbing off, as well as making the horn look cooler. The horn is well washed and cured in stout. (Note: This was just part of the creation process. I am in no way claiming a specific use for this vessel)

Hopefully you enjoy this project!

Hi there!
Thank you for critiquing the photo as well as the object itself, your comments and observations are extremely helpful. having worked with this photo a little too much, the shadow at the bottom wasn't really noticed, and I appreciate you pointing that out. More lights to the rescue!

Hello !
I am so glad that what I noticed helped you I think your work is awesome and it should get the best possible exposure. Let me know if you ever change the photo (or add a different one of the same horn). I would be really eager/happy to check it !

Keep up the beautiful works

What a beautiful piece! I wouldn't be ashamed to walk around in public carrying this just to bring out my inner Viking. The raven carvings stand out really well with the ink you've applied and the leather band looks like a tight fit. I'd love to see the design repeated as an emboss in the leather too, or as a compliment to the main design on the horn to add a little more flair. If it's possible to 'age' the leather, it'll also add to that old world look but I don't work leather so I'm not sure if that's feasible and still maintain the leather's integrity. As far as the fetish design itself, they're very skillfully carved and clean as well as stylish. I'm looking forward to seeing the whole line!

Thank you!
Your idea of adding a design to the leather and aging it is deliciously original. Will definitely have to try that on the next one. Thanks!

If I had the money, I'd certainly buy one of these.
