Description 8 x 10 glued (not digital) collage.
---
Full view may be more enjoyable to you, as there is a lot going on here.
---
Multi-coats of fluid acrylics and inks over a variety of papers and ephemera. Gold pen, gold leaf, Microns. Snips from a 19th century book entitled "Children's Rights." The dashing couple is a gel transfer (original photo owned by the fabulous Mrsinman of Flickr).
---
The piece of old measuring tape is from the 1950s, maybe even earlier. Who knows? It was a gift.
--
I coated the whole thing with beeswax rubbed in with a rag because I wanted a subtle sheen. I got the subtle sheet, and as a bonus, the smell is SWEET.

Your style reminds me of those great dada/cubist paintings from the early 20th Century... Well done!

Well, it has the amount of work that goes into a digital piece, I think. Lots and lots of detail here.

my pixelpics are not that detailed! But I get your point!

Thanks! Working to a larger size (for me 8 x 10 is BIG), and in a softer layering pallette was a cool experience.

Beautifully done, Laura...with so much to see and ponder. I appreciate your comments on process...they are so helpful in understanding the amount of work that went into making this. The image on the screen, no matter how well photographed, can never compare with the actual, physical piece...in essence, it is two distinct works of art.

LauraTringaliHolmes In reply to hummbuzz [2010-10-17 12:06:59 +0000 UTC]

Interesting comment about the distinctions. In real life the guy just looks way more dapper...probably because one can see the shine of his "wings" and the faint shadow they cast. Shadows play an important part but that darn scanner flattens them right out.

Never mind, it is all a matter of very small electric currents. You can be very happy when they are there

Love the bees wax thing. I've done that before and the effect is so nice.

Beautiful piec and the book is strange!

The book is weird and wonderful. The author, Mrs. Wiggs, turns out to be an advocate for sensible childrearing and equality of little girls...in 1892.

It's paper and I was so glad when I lucked into it at a rummage sale. I am down to a few half-pieces now. Haven't seen it around since I bought it about a year ago. Glad you liked the piece...thanks!

Sort of a leather-and-lace portrait. I love the text that I can see "If the thing gets out of order"

The text is really rather amazing, I thought. Very forward-looking for its time. Worth a blowup. And there is a snip on eyeglasses and corsets on the bottom....
