Description This is a birthday present for my mother.
I haven't drawn anything for her in ages but yesterday I got this sudden impulse and this is what came out of it.

It's referenced from a photo taken by my stepmother or father, and sure, it's not a 100% likeness since those stones would have killed me if I tried, but it's close enough.

This is a place both me and my mother love, which is why I wanted to draw it. It's the view from the road to Bergnäs, the place I spent pretty much all my childhood summers...
They say that home is where your heart is.
So this is my home.

I am terribly homesick at the moment - which is pretty funny since I'll be moving from Borås in less than a month - and sure, it means that I miss my mother, father, sister, all the dogs and the rest of my pretty huge family... but more than anything I miss this.
I miss the calm, the beauty and the nature.
I hope to spend a lot of my time in Bergnäs this summer.

... I thought that practicing some landscapes was a good idea so why not draw the prettiest I know?
Still, the stones were a pain.

I don't think that I'll ever grow out of missing it x'D Bergnäs really is a sanctuary for me...

Oh my god... O_O "Not a 100% likeness", are you kidding me?? I truly believed it was a photo, even when I fullviewed it! It wasn't until I read your comment that I suddenly realized it was not a photo, so I'm very very impressed. All those details, the sky and the water's reflection... it's gorgeous and just... amazing. Now I wish I had Mary Poppin's magic so I could jump into that picture - I'd love that place. I know it I would. And your story behind it is touching. <3

Well, just because it looks real doesn't mean that it's a 100% likeness to what the picture showed All the stones and stuff aren't exactly as they're supposed to be

I do too - very much. This place is very special to me so while I feel very protective over it on one hand I want other people to know of its beauty on the other x'D Pretty confusing at times.

I needed to practice on landscapes so... well... I did x'D I still need to work on it since I want to be able to draw them without looking at a photo but for now I'll have to settle for that I guess...

This is utterly gorgeous! I thought it was a photo first until I looked closer at it and realized it wasn't a photo at all! God, this is impressive! I knew you were good, but not THIS good! It looks so lifelike I almost feel like I'm there, standing on the road and looking out over the water. Such a beautiful scene. I wish I could see it in person.
I understand why you're homesick. Looking at this, I feel homesick too... and I'm home!

I'm sure your mother will love this. I know I would! I wish I could draw something like this for my mom, perhaps a scene from where she grew up.

It was made easier by the fact that I could look at a photo while drawing it... I've always been good at drawing from a reference like this, even if I haven't practiced in years
And it was so awesome to draw on just one layer again!

And yeah... I feel very homesick when looking at this. It is so beautiful and I sadly took it for granted before I moved down south I really miss the north...

She likes it very much ^_^

Photo reference is gold. I always screw it up when I try though. Somehow, I manage to skew the picture and it ends up looking all wonky and wierd. I think it reflects my head...
Woah, you did this in ONE layer!? Gaaah! How do you DO that? I mean, I know HOW, but... How? I guess I'm just too much of a coward to try, afraid to mess things up. I STILL draw each color in a separate layer. In a picture with this many nuances, it would be a lot of layers... A LOT.

I understand But you'll be up north all summer, right?

Mothers are like that, and in my case, fathers too. My dad is proud as a peacock over me and my drawings. Honestly, I think he's more proud over them than I am And he never miss an opportunity to show them to every other person he knows. It's a little bit embarrassing at times. I feel like a five year old showing off my doodles.

I'm pretty good at keeping them somewhat decent... it's not 100% correct in all aspects but it's good enough It looks pretty even next to the photo. That is all I ask for
I like doing it on one layer It makes it feel more real and kinda like traditional media... so I can blend more freely without having to bother about drawing on the correct layer and all that. It's a bit scary at first but eventually you learn to save those times when you've messed up - because you do, it's inevitable - and be a bit less strict and stiff. It's actually very relaxing once you're able to let go and just draw.

I will be, yes.

My dad barely knows that I draw Or... he does. But he doesn't really care. He knows that I'm going to an art school for a year and that I like drawing - and that he supports - but he's not really interested in what I draw and how it looks.
Every time I say that people think it's horrible but... I don't. It's just how he is and I don't mind I don't demand that everyone should be interested in what I draw - family or not.
