Description Right.
I got the stupid idea to draw some scenery a while back, and this was the result. Or... well... the result came MONTHS after the actual idea since I never really felt like finishing it, but now I finally have.

At first, there were people in this picture, but when I realised that they were the reason I didn't want to finish it, I erased them. So now it looks like this.

This is the cave of the Seyalle Thuli, a fire people that I have created for my story Startwins, and yes, they can live inside of a volcano. They're fire-proof.
Period.

Yes, the main part is made with watercolours but with some quite obvious touch-ups in Photoshop. The light is entirely in Photoshop, but it was so boring without it that... well... it wouldn't have been interesting. Simple as that.

There isn't much to say anyway.
I won't be doing this again, that's for sure, but it's done anyway.

Enjoy.

This is a absolutely beautiful piece! I love everything about this, the colors, the shading, the style. And the lava flow is most definitely lava. Would you mind if I referenced some of this for one of my own scenery pieces I'm working on? It'd just be observing the style of how you did, blablabla, and trying to replicate that for a scene I've had laid out in my head for a while now. I wouldn't be copying your scene or anything of that sort.

Thank you! It's a rather old piece now but I still like it ^_^

I guess it would be okay to use as inspiration as long as nothing is outright copied. I'll all for inspiring people So as long as the exact scene isn't stolen just go right ahead!

I wouldn't dare steal scenes or ideas. Just studying the technique... sort of. lol!

Thank You!

I love the atmosphere of this! (It immediately made me change whatever I was listening to before to the lord of the rings soundtrack.)
The lights in the windows and the warm colours make it look very comfortable and snug; I can really imagine seeing this from the point of view of a Thuli coming home after a long journey. And at the same time it all looks so strange and mysterious and there's a certain sense of foreboding because of the magma-streams. I really like them; they seem to be moving really slowly, sluggishly, like molten stone actually would. They nearly look like giant pillars. Very impressive!
I also like how subtle the photoshop touch up is. It really adds to the picture and it's mood, without drawing attention to itself.

PS being fire-proof would be so awesome.

Aaww! I'm glad to hear that! ^_^

It was actually very nice when I had people in it too - since it seemed a bit more alive then - but since I was so lazy I had to remove them
But I still like the atmosphere, yes, and the magma streams was one of the most important elements in it I've always liked magma streams, for that sluggish movement and bright glow and I always thought of them when I wanted to design the Thulis' home...

And yes, I really tried to keep the Photoshop touches to a minimum, since it would have ruined it otherwise
Thank you once again for a lovely comment!

And yes, it SO would x3

Good to see you having a crack at something different. I know you don't want to go back to this one, but I think with your talent in lighting effects you could really make this something special. It seems to me that sense of atmosphere could really be drawn out if you darkened the whole picture and had the lava flows and windows giving off a soft hazy red light. Well they do now, I mean take it to extremes. But then you would lose most of your stone work I suppose

Having said that, if I was roleplaying and someone presented this to me as a typical habitation of these people I would be mighty impressed. It gives a good impression of what the cave as a whole might be like. In this sense I suppose it would be good storyboard art....which is a compliment. I can see how that could be taken the wrong way Sorry I might sound a bit blunt, I'm having a hard time getting back into the whole net thing again

That would have been pretty awesome, yes, but I would never be able to do that with watercolours >_> I mean, I might not be a complete disaster, but I'm definitely not THAT good
I can settle for how it looks now, since I kinda like it. The more time that passes the nicer I am towards it, so I can honestly say that I like it now, yes
And yes, I would, which would suck, since it took HOURS to make

And I take that as a huge compliment, thank you
I would want to draw the rest of the places where these element people lives, but that would demand lots of time and a huge amount of details, so I don't think that I will

Thanks for commenting though

... ... ...

..... ....hm

.... ...I think that would be beyond awesome. I head might seriously explode witnessing the sheer talent of someone, anyone, achieving that with just watercolours. I was actually thinking you would more do it in PS.

lol, I think that right there is one of the reasons why I was an awesome DM (yup big head much)and ultimately couldn't keep gaming when life imposed time constraints on the whole process. Oddly I think my creativity (at least in terms of artistic output anyways) has gone down steadily as my RPing has decreased. I'd do a graph and stuff but I hate graphs and math-type things

Even if you don't do stuff for your roleplaying I would like to see you have another crack at an environment/landscape some time soon. Maybe not something underground with a craptonne of stone work to do though....you have to cut yourself some slack sometime you know

Well, I won't be doing it in Photoshop, since it would be to ruin it
It feels bad enough as it is (with the changes and effects that is) and I will NOT do it all over again in Photoshop
Sorry dude

You know, I think that would be pretty reasonable somehow. I'm still roleplaying like an idiot, and I never run out of ideas and inspiration
I think it keeps my creative spirit easily accessible somehow, and it never really settles down and fades - because I have to keep it active.
So start roleplaying again

I might
I actually did it more often before - for some odd reason - and I kinda like it, even if I find it hard >_> I mean, I'm good at humans and such and can do reasonable backgrounds, but when you remove the humans the backgrounds have to be a lot better, and that's where it fails me I think
The biggest problem is probably that I don't know what to do, or in which medium But I'll figure it out eventually I guess...

Hmmm....true. I agree with you. It is good as is. But maybe the lighting might be something to consider next time you create something similar. Having said all this though, I just noticed the original (at least in spirit) version of this one from way back when. I think the main improvement between the two is the lighting (and to a lesser extent the texturing). So I suppose you have kinda done what I was thinking anyway...if that makes any sense

I would love to get back into roleplaying. But my old group has disbanded and moved to different ends of the country (and it's a big one you know ). I haven't come across anyone I feel 'RP compatible' with since. I make up with it with copious amounts of RPG and MMO video games though. I'll just have to find another way to keep the creative juices broiling

I would like to see some perspective work. Even if it's just silly exercises. I think perspective is what really makes a background pop. And once you get it under your thumb you can incorporate it to make awesome scenes with characters and all those other doo-dads. In fact, to be completely honest I think that is probably the main aspect your work is lacking in. And when I say lacking I mean only compared to full-blown professional (hollywood-esque) works. It's perfectly fine as is. I think it's just a direction you might consider moving in - being keen on self-improvement and all.

This is frikken amazing, give me your skillz, o mighty one!

In all seriousness, I really love it. The lava actually looks like...well, lava.
Which is far better than anything I could've spat out.

I have no idea how to draw lava really, so I just... did something >_> And it ended up being acceptable

Landscapes can be fun if difficult, so congrats on this! I like the lava flowing from the roof there, as well as the concept. Making them fire-people makes sense in a volcanic environment since otherwise it would be pretty hot for humans to be living there. The rocks are nice.

I've actually drawn a similar picture before, but it's so old that I don't want to link to it
So I've liked the concept for a while, that's for sure

And, honestly, the place was made after them, not the opposite

I'm impressed. Landscapes can be a boring pain-in-the-ass to finish, so kudos to you for going through with it. That said, the end result is nice, especially the lighting on the rocks.

Especially on an A4 in water colour It would have been easier if it had been Photoshop...

And the lighting is a part of that which is made in Photoshop, but thanks none the less
