Description Another photo/animal study from last week, this time it is a Silky Chicken. I always liked the look of these birds and I wanted to experiment and study the folds and features found on them.

Anyways, references were used. I hope you all enjoy and thanks for looking!

Wow, great study!! I thought this was a photo, at first, because it looked so realistic. Chickens are kind of awesome, actually. This guy will be getting all the lady chickens...

Beautiful painting!

I clicked over because it looks very much like a portrait shot I took of one of my silkie roos many moons ago. Very cool!

It's funny that the animals from your studies, with their bobbly, 'ugly' faces, are a lot like the creatures you come up with yourself

I admit, I am rather fond of the ugly looking creatures.

This is a fantastic study. At first I just glanced over the thumbnail, thought it was a photograph, and continued down the page. Taking a closer look on my way back up I realised it was a painting. Brilliant work. The shading an texture is perfect.
I have four silkies myself, one is a cockerel. They're really lovely birds in both temperament and appearance.

That's always the issue I face with photo studies, I do them too well and people sometimes pass them up.

But yes, you flatter me with your comment, thank you very much. I have heard great things about silkies, and eventually I would like to have one myself.

wow, the detail in this is incredible! I absolutely adore chickens and your study of this beautiful Silkie Rooster is dead on with all the folds, tiny stray feathers, and especially the mulberry color of his skin. GREAT JOB!!
Keep it up

you have inspired me to be more diligent about doing more detailed studies
so Thank you

Your work was very deserving of a compliment! and it could use many more!

Yeah your study has me all stoked to go out and watch the chickens here on the farm and do some of my own studies =^-^=
And thanks I'm sure if I work at it hard enough I'll get some pleasant results. And then I can work at it some more! You can never have enough studies/learning pieces ^________^

There's just something about your style that makes it so realistic. I think it's because of the gritty texture that makes it look so much like skin, and the thin realistic stray feathers.

Aw~! So cute. I really like this a lot.

Really makes me miss my Timmy though... He was a grey bantam silky. Sweetest little bugger ever.

I'm sorry to hear about Timmy, but thank you a lot for the kind comment. The good stories I hear about these chickens makes me want one even more.

SilverSugar In reply to LindseyWArt [2011-07-24 22:51:06 +0000 UTC]

I find that the bantam ones are a heck of a lot of fun. They think they are a lot bigger than they are, and well...mine thought he was a dog. He would come when he was called and could even jump on my shoulder on command. My other bantam Zelda used to do that too. She was really the most clever chicken I've had--she used to tip over my sodas so she could drink them.

I hope you can get one soon~!

Wow, that description sold me. If it comes to a point in my life that I can get one I'll jump at the chance. Do you have idea where I can get a few silky chicks? I loved to know.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SilverSugar In reply to LindseyWArt [2011-07-25 02:58:37 +0000 UTC]

You can train chickens to do all sorts of things. The also live indoors pretty well, although I've never been allowed to have a house chicken. Odd as it sounds, they do sell bird diapers online somewhere that fit them.

As for where to buy silkies... A lot of the time the best places to get them are from local breeders or from feed/pet stores that carry them in your area. You can always ask them to place an order for you. Otherwise you could try [link] or [link] . Try your own search for other mail-order chickens. There are probably better companies out there. Those were just the quickest I found. If you are interested, I could ask my neighbor what company she used since she's the one I know in my area who buys chickens special like that.

You are incredibly awesome then, I've heard that they friendly and docile birds, and their appearance sold me. I would love to eventually have a few of these myself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NukeRooster In reply to LindseyWArt [2011-06-28 21:32:28 +0000 UTC]

they are the silliest birds-if you ever get some with a lot of feathers on the feet-they waddle in the most hilarious fashion. (as do cochins-accept cochins don't have the fluff on the head)

The only issues with silkies is...they're so small and slow, and easily picked off. >: Their skulls are open (they have very little protection for the brain-this offers more room for the feathers to grow on the head-and is a problem for most crowned birds), if the bird gets pecked or has damage to their head, they can get all sorts of problems like crook neck, brain damage, paralysis, merek's disease ect. :c But overall, really friendly if you're like big mommy to them. I had hens and a rooster named Jake, and he felt just like Styrofoam. XD

LindseyWArt In reply to NukeRooster [2011-06-29 02:23:05 +0000 UTC]

Despite there issues they still sound like wonderful pets to have, I would love to just pet the poof on their heads (and all over) all day.

NukeRooster In reply to LindseyWArt [2011-06-30 02:34:10 +0000 UTC]

They're really soft, like down on a bird. XD And their wings are really wimpy, and when they try to glide, they don't go very far.
