Great technique - you know the dynamics of folds immaculately!

Though I'm thinking the folds look a little too shiney I'm assuming from the shade of blue, it's denim, but the intensity of the yellow makes me think it something more like satin.

Great tutorial, this is the closest I've come to realistic fold drawing tutorials.

I have question. Why click quadratic symbol to fix transparent pixels?

Thanks!!!!!

Lizkay In reply to Culturalrider [2009-11-19 19:34:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Oh you need to fix resp. lock the transparent pixels or otherwise the blur filter is going to blur your whole shape, if the pixels are locked only the shading inside will be blurred

Thanks for sharing this! It's a very straightforward, but understandable and effective tutorial on a subject that a lot of artists like myself have trouble with.

Can you tell me something? Do you just place the folds anywhere you want or does it have to be at the spot where you know the folds gonna be like that? i really wanna know this. Folding, for me, is the hardest part in drawing. and body and head shape, and shading. I really suck.

Lizkay In reply to InoShikaChoF [2007-09-05 05:40:52 +0000 UTC]

You can test that quite easily on yourself, specially for clothing, areas which bend (elbow for example) create a flow of folds going out from the folding-poit, folds on a surface (just if you throw a satin-stuff on a table) look different, when I have problems in getting the right shape or placement of folds, I try to rebuild the situation in real, that still gives the best reference

Thankies!
I.. myself, would call me a Detailfreak, the only problem is that I don't want to spend ages just for one part of a picture. Sure you can make better and more realistic folds if you paint them all by hand (or tablet/mouse of course) but yup.. this is a quite fast way to create these

Greetings!

Haha...yeah. I'm with you on that, too. I love putting lots of detail in, but it's too hard to spend a lot of time on them... Finding shortcuts is always a nice thing...
