Description Celtic knots are addictive and very bad for your health. Really. You know it's bad when you close your eyes and you see interlace patterns everywhere.
I worked on this pretty much once a day for the past week, and all day Friday because I got a snow day. I originally intended it to be an ink wash, but the ink I was going to use was not green, as it was labeled, but instead a bizarre yellowish-weird-with-no-resemblance-to-green-whatsoever. So I opted for green watercolor. I used up rather a lot of it . . .
The color of the scan is a bit off from the original. XP
My brother kind of decided it's supposed to be my character Padraig, so, it's Padraig I guess. He lives in Ireland, so it works.

I'm putting a photo of the pencil in my scraps, in case anyone is interested.

References:

Reference for the castle is a pic of a castle in Scotland, I think, called Tioram castle.
The knots and patterns were inspired by early Irish manuscripts and other medieval Irish art, pictures of which I have in a book on Irish art, oddly enough.

That's watercolour isn't it? Amazing how you can get so much precision

Yep, watercolor ^_^

I wasn't using a lot of water, you can get better detail if the watercolor is more dry.

Very nice work, good shading and composition. The celtic knots are great, but imho too many different ones in the picture - I can't decide which ones are too much - as they are all very werll done - but to my eye it would seem better if there were maybe only one kind of knot along the upper & lower boder and only one other type going up/down along the long side.

Anyway, that is just nitpicking All in all it is a great job.

Thank you

I hadn't drawn knots in a long while before I drew this, so I went a little crazy with them I guess

Using a single colour highlighted the amazing work you did with the shading. I also like the look of stubborness on the the face of your character. Well done1

I really like the use of just green in this. And your knotwork and interlaced animals are so beautifully done and frames the whole image quite nicely.

Yes, Celtic knotwork is eeeeeeeevil; it will hurt you if you let it. ^_^ Oh, and I love the "Irish hilt" on the sword. Nice addition, that...

Really great work -- especially for something as unforgiving as watercolor. What brand do you use, by the way?

Lizzardcreature In reply to Cobweb-stock [2005-12-12 20:53:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks , I was wondering if anyone would notice the hilt . . .

I use Yarka watercolors.

The knots were kind of a pain, I worked on them over a few days, so I'm not sure exactly how long it took.
