"honey, dont talk to that man, he's dirty."

it wouldnt matter anyway, he was in a world all his own.

Wonderful...you give him humanity and dignity with this shot....something that many of us in today's world forget that we all have. Very well done!

The expression on his face along with the complimentary perspective of the photograph and tilt of his body express his inner pain, confusion and distorted reality. The homeless are a great subject because they display raw emotion which gives them a sense of humanity that we can all connect with. We make great efforts in concealing our anxieties and depression, most of the time at least.

You're from SanFran?

Guess I know who was the first to be shown the Sony Bravia commercial

What was interesting to me in this photo, was the decision to tilt the angle of view.. or rather to horizon of perspective. I often find myself impulsively doing that, usually in architectural shots, and eventhough it looks so good and natural in the view finder, it tends to have an unsettling feeling when viewing the print.

That being said... this image definitely not only pulls off the tilt, but makes it the ancor of the composition. One could elaborate on how you used a tipsy perspective to depict the tipsy state of mind... but most importantly I love how this approach emphasizes just how bent over this gay was over his cart, since by tilting the camera you got him into an unpright position in respect to our line of sight.

I am trying to think of it any other way.. and it would have been boring, too familiar, and disbalanced if the everything was properly alligned and the guy was falling off the expected verticals. It also makes me wonder.. does he see the world around him as crooked.,.. or is he aware of the tilt, but is waiting for the rest of his environment to get in sync with his perspective.

thankyou mate...

the consideration is much appreciated.

i often try to tilt my perspective... its usually to fit in small details into the frame.. but when i'm shooting i'm constantly moving back and forth.. getting on my tip-toes.. etc etc.. just to fit enough information into the frame.

this particular shot.. i was walking in the mission and had spotted this guy from a block away.. i prepared my lens for exposure.. and then really took my time while passing him.. snapping off at least 5-6 bursts handheld.. without crouching to get to the viewfinder.

some would say.. blahh he's shooting in the dark.. so to speak..

but i knew what i wanted, i knew i didnt want to interrupt this man.. and i knew i wanted to be low, and slanted.

i guess i feel able to play with the perspective because i am working with alternative subjects.. this composition on a more serious/formal subject probably wouldnt work.. but in this case.. it does.

another thing worth mentioning.. try to match your composition with the subjects eyeline. if someone is looking down towards the ground.. match the frame up with that eyeline.. you really bring more focus on the subject when the eyes are a clear centerpoint/anchor on the frame.

hope this made sense... i just got up =\

Is DA really the first thing you do upon awakening? ...maybe just this once.

What was this taken with? When you mention continuous bursts and not looking through the view finder, I'd assume it's not a range finder and it's must be an automatic winder. regardless...

That is very useful concise advice... usually we educate ourselves about what works and does not work as a general rule, on a subliminally driven osmosis of exemplary images... but to have the actual words "match the frame to the eyeline" in one's head is definitely a more expedient association for future reference.

I could say a lot about composition, perspective, colours, facial expression, framing, etc...

but this might not even partially hit the spot.

all I can say is that I rarely saw a photograph transporting so much life. so much life that no one is interested in.

I wish I knew more information, 18-70mm with a d70? I'll just assume so.

I would like to get closer to this guy, I mean, look at him, lets get intimate [in a non sexual way of course], I am drawn in initially by this picture, now i'd like to meet this person.

this was shot with a 24-120VR i believe

it is about getting intimate..

getting into the intimate space between you and your subject.

the deeper you go, the better the photo.
the wider you go, the more is included
the more dialogue betwee you and your subject, the better the relationship..

the better the photo..

i'm talking about getting close, not just TAKING (in a literal sense) an photo, stealing an image, preserving a moment of time for YOU. i'm talking about an exchange. i want to leave my subject with something, something about ME.. they might forget it seconds later, but i refuse to TAKE photos.

Awesome picture with a perfect composition as usual. Do you just randomly shoot at waist/chest level ? I do that quite often and sometimes I turns surprisingly good, with angles you wouldn't have thought about/dared if you looked through the viewfinder...

You got right in there close to your subject where many people are afraid to go; resulting in a very telling image.
I live out in the central valley but often go to the city to shoot and just hang out.

i was walking with a few friends .. saw him from a distance.. he was off in his own world.. completely.. whatever.. drunk.. high on crack.. i dont know.. he would mumble a few words.. wipe his face.. pause.. mumble.. over and over..

as i walked by.. i brought my camera up.. snapped a few frames.. and kept walking.

usually i stop and talk to my subjects.. but he definately wasnt in a coherent state.

You are right everyone does walk by....people that live in citys like seattle and sf with a large # of homless become hard and like cynics...they need to get passed that lowest common denominator the "scary" man who will take your money. I think with photography and a solid story you can help open that up for people.
