Benson had a penchant for slug elementals, apparently. They appear in two other stories, and his ghosts are often refreshingly un-ghost-like, very much in the vein of M R James. He even goes into Bigfoot/Yeti territory with "The Horror Horn."
I'll do more Benson art eventually, and The Room In the Tower seems obligatory.

Actor Richard Crowest has an online collection of him reading E F Benson. Very good stuff!

I love this one myself. I first got it in one of those not nearly as common as they should be horror anthologies that does the classics. It lead me to buy a collection of all of Benson's horror fiction. What a great author!

Yes, he's great. I also like some of the stories produced by his brothers.

Yep, this is one of my favourite horror tales ever, and I can see why that list only reached up to 1940.Β

I always thought EF Benson was better than Lovecraft. He's in the same league as M.R James, H.H Munro, Guy Endor and William Hope Hodgson.

Benson is certainly different from Lovecraft, and his stories are more compact. His horror fiction deserves to be better known.

Great! i'll sure check it out(the shortstory)
reminds me of Β the game 'Penumbra'(which is higly Lovecraftian inspired, so the game is probably inspired by the story)

The title is "Negotium Perambulans" (which roughly translates from the Latin as "the pestilence that moves in the dark"), and is written by E F Benson. Also look for Benson's "Caterpillars". Creepy as hell!

Try to find the story. It's old, but one of the best short horror tales written.

I think it has been published in collections quite a few times.

I absolutely recommend it, too. Be sure to read it with all the lights on...and then don't turn them off.

So do I! For those who haven't read it I can really recommend it. Chilling ending!
