Description Description:
Amphipteres, also known as Flying Serpents, are a species of wyvern with long slender bodies and a single pair of wings. These majestic creatures spend the majority of their time in the air, slithering among the clouds in search of prey. One of the fastest creatures in the Lands of Dunn, Amphipteres descend upon roaming animals such as elk in mere seconds, striking them down with vicious tail swings just before unleashing a stream of deadly flame capable of melting iron. They are opportunistic hunters who try to avoid confrontation with other large monsters, as they are relatively lightweight and lack the bulk necessary to endure close quarters combat. Winged serpents excel at ranged combat however, opting to keep their distance and tire out their opponents enough for them to either flee, or secure a kill.
A constant threat to mortals, Amphipteres are both revered and feared as natural forces of destruction that must be kept at bay at all costs. For this reason most cities are protected by stationed Lamia, who keep an eye out for similar threats and are ready to respond at a moment's notice. In fact a Lamia's presence alone is enough to ward off an Amphiptere, as the former consider them a delicacy.
However, should any man or mer be caught alone in the wilderness, death is almost a certainty.

Habitat:
Native to the Hyperian Peninsula, Amphipteres roost on the cliffs facing the eastern sea. This is also their breeding ground, where they have easy access to seals and fish. Here they are safe from larger lowland threats such as Chorts, Behemoths and Lamia; though this isn't to say that they are completely safe as they expose themselves to leviathans and even mermaids when diving into the sea.
They can often be seen releasing streams of flame into the sky during the early hours of the morning, venting out the built up power within their flame sac.

Domestication:
Like other species of wyvern, Amphipteres are often sought after by cyclopes for their fiery breath. Since cyclopes typically cannot use any forms of magic, Amphipteres are captured and treated as convenient pets that earn their keep by providing their owners with the gift of flame. They are also captured by mortals on occasion, who use them as a means of aerial transport. A very fast and reckless method, but a viable one nonetheless.
