Day 3: Gibsonvale Horse Trials CCI*** Dressage Phase Havillands Harap Alb and John Dampford.
Harap was an old hand at dressage, he knew what to expect and how to behave, however this never stopped John from feeling nervous. He was fine in the sand school back home but for some reason when having to perform dressage in front of a large crowd he always got the needle. Today was no exception, he looked very pale and very sick (much to the alarm of the St John Ambulance members who were manning the first aid tent!) although his general lack of sleep the night before didn't help either.
He had all the support in the world from his friends too, maybe he was worried that he'd let them down?
Harap as usual looked after his favourite rider and performed each movement carefully and precisely, he often wondered why his best friend got so tense when they visited different arenas, I mean, the sand was the same, the numbers round the edge were the same and the movements they had to do were the same. Humans were funny temperamental things, Harap decided, they needed careful handling or they got nervous.

I had a brain out and couldn't for the life of me work out what the front of a dressage jacket looked like so I used this photo [link]
as a reference for John's jacket.

I know St John chaps don't wear the white bandoliers any more but it makes them easier to recognise, also Bunny is having a word with the St John Badger about what to do if someone faints!

First Aid Bunny, always a useful soul to have around.

I love Harap's expression, it looks like he's a little tired of John getting so nervous! His legs are superb, by the way, and I'm envious you've managed to draw a shoulder-in that looks like a shoulder-in - I have failed magnificently in the past!

Thank you, I did do a lot of research and used about three different photos sort of mixed together to get this pose,
Harap is just bemused by the peculiarities of humans. He is very understanding though.

The people in the crowd seem a bit sad...
