Description This was a Contest Entry for the Last Witch Hunter Illustration Contest
Oh my goodness I didn't think I was going to make it in time considering how brief the deadline was but I made it! With just a couple days to spare as well. I'm just so.. Literally proud of myself right now because ordinarily this would have taken me at least over a month to do.. I say this because I've never actually made a full blown illustration like this before in my life with so many bodies and things going on. I'm startled but in a good way if that makes any sense.

I almost didn't enter this contest. It was.. A lot of tossing around and pacing about as to whether or not I had the time. I'm well aware of my own limits and capabilities but in the end I'm glad I took this on. It proved to me what I was capable of achieving under a deadline if I worked really hard at it. Not only that I've discovered all sorts of new techniques along the way and got to challenge myself with something completely new.

So you know, I've taken the liberty of fashioning alternative version of Kaulder's clothing from the movie as sadly I having the worst imaginable time finding any sort of reference other than the top half of his garments. The sword is a bit different as well from what's ordinarily in the movie as well due to its glow but I thought a more fantasy approach to it would be alright. Give it an even more magical quality that I thought suited the piece a bit more.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it.

..Now for an explanation for the piece as to what exactly is going on here.. This was based off of the script for Third Prologue that was provided for the contest. The Premise being the following prompt.

Interior Scene in a darkened cave. Kaulder does swift battle, flaming sword in hand, with the murky enemies surrounding him. Slashing through the dark humanoid figures, shrieking all around him, his eyes wide with rage, the essences of each Witch Lord escapes their ruptured carcasses and enters the cave walls around Kaulder, frozen in time as if cave paintings.
I can only hope that I managed to capture that successfully.  What I've written below is what I wished to illustrate in my concept of the premise.

As you can see, the nature of the piece is quite chaotic in itself due to the intensity of the blind rage of a man out for nothing but vengeance. One by one the Witch Lords are struck down by his sword and with each death; the essence of the very enemies he slaughtered expand from them to form images onto the cavern walls of things that were, things that are, and things that are to come.

I suppose you could say that in a way, I tried to incorporate all four prologues into my piece by my own interpretation of them. As the Witch Lord's magical energies become infused into the walls. Images of barren trees appear to streak themselves into a pattern. Images of witch folk standing together conjuring spells while men carrying swords, axes, and spears come marching in towards them.

Butterflies fill the room as the energy disperses much likes the ones that Kaulder will soon face in the future as they manifest between the streetlights but this is something that he does not yet realize and yet soon will become all too familiar with. His destiny was laid out before him since the beginning. He just didn't know it yet.

Thank you for viewing and best of luck to all the other entries!

Wonderful movement with the sword and flames! I like the colors you chose for it and it has a lot of emotion in the movement. Good luck!

So, I wake up this morning ready to put the final touches on my entry for the contest when I saw this.  My first thought was... well crap, maybe i'll try a different prologue.  This is seriously good work, you captured everything that was in the description and more.  The color and style is terrific and you managed to fit in the entire scene without making it look cluttered.  Good luck to you!

Oh dear, thank you! That's very nice of you to say! This is the first time that I've tried illustrating something like this and I learned so many new things along the way. I really enjoyed working on this!

Don't give up on your entry however! You worked really hard on it. Don't be discouraged by other people's entries, in the end it all comes down to the judges. Maybe they won't like something in mine while they'll like something in yours. You never can tell. Even I've said similar things but despite that I still had fun and I can't wait to see the winners even if it's not me.

Good luck to the both of us when you submit your entry!

Okay you already know how much I love this but I have to say it again so here goes--

This entire piece is absolutely gorgeous!! I can see all the effort you put in and I can't stop looking at all the details. The blue energy and butterflies are eerily beautiful, the fire lighting is perfect and I still can't get over those clothes. The posing, detail and shading-- Everything in this piece is really just breathtaking. It's chaotic, there's so much happening but it's absolute eye-candy. I just can't look away.

You really did wonderfully on this entry, I'm so proud of you!! Good luck~ I'm rooting for you!
