Description i put this in the fractal art category, though it's only tangentially related: the "nebula" density field is in fact a very complex fractal transformation, with only a few iterations.

here is the program that produces it (quickly hacked together 32bit version, it's slow as hell): [link]

you may need to install this, and it may fail if you don't use an english version of windows (also untested on vista): [link]

normally i try to not "arbitrarily" (seems to me) rotate my original pictures after i've rendered them, but i've made an(other) exception. i guess i don't understand art any comments on whether or not landscape is better?

as for what it's doing, that's long and technical; if anyone cares you can just email, and probably if you do you already chat with me online for example my friends ~greenhybrid and ~Darnal are both writing 2d ray tracers (i pimp again my mouldy old articles: [link] and [link] )

yo, I was just looking at this again... seriously its so good. Its like, multiple density fluid/cloudy/ sedimenty and just.. its so amazing. yep. I don't mean to impose, but make more of this stuff, or tell me how to make it

this looks like a really amazing effect, I tried following the volume_scatter.zip link but it was broken :\
Looks excellent really, I haven't looked into anything 2D ray tracers before

it's something i started doing on my own, and got a few friends doing, but haven't seen it anywhere else it's not especially useful, but it's great fun for playing with optics (eg those dispersion renders etc)

hey man, what kind of software is this exactly, its just that the site is entirely gone and I'm not sure at all what kind of search terms I'd need to put into google to find at least a program which is simmilar. I was thinking, there must be a more well known software which works just with 2D ray tracing and fiddling about with 2D forms and generative drawing etc..

heya nick the program is a buggy implementation of 2d volumetric scattering, and yeah my old crappy website is long dead... anyway, i'm not aware of anysuch software unfortunately

Ah alright, its a really interesting idea for a program, the effects are great..
I guess stuff like processing/pure data/open frameworks would be sufficient alternatives.
Thanks!

..quadratikick my ass math hurts so bad..

Ceci est extrème, mon ami!

Reminds me of light bodies we see when our eyes are more receptive to electromagnetics, via tryptomenes and mageic mushrooms.

appreciated i'd actually prefer less noise in this image - had to employ some dirty tricks to clean it up, ironically.

was such fun to make i swear i could teach you to code 2d ray tracing btw... the most hectic maths you need is solving quadratic equations, and the whole process is very intuitive.

quite ok so far, shit's gonna hit the fan end of this month tho, in a big way; i've been owning my computer graphics course, that's kinda fun (and it's unusual for me to do well in a uni context ).

btw, you still owe me some pictures of the local flora (some fauna is welcome too)...

fankye, the "design" is a bit accidental i have to admit, but mathematics is often kind and throws beautiful things from simple equations

the lights emit (predominantly) red, green and blue light as defined in the .scn file; you can change their colour, size and position if you like but "camera" control is fixed :/

so there's no pre-canned gradients going on, that's neato light transport, of the statistically unbiased (as accurate as it gets) variety. this contrasts strongly with biased methods like photon mapping, which only assuredly converges to the correct solution in the limit, after an infinite number of phtons have been shot+stored: [link]
