Description This is basically a comparison photo. I decided to play around with a little bit of needle sculpting on Rainbow Dash's face last night. It's not very good because I did it on a whim at 5:00am yesterday, I didn't have any instructions and free-handed it, and I couldn't adjust the stuffing because the head was already sewn to the body. But I think it's okay looking considering that I totally winged it. They're just little modifications in the mouth, the nostrils, and the bridge of the nose.Β They're a bit clearer in the full-size image.

Now I need your help. Which do you think looks better? The needle-sculpted Rainbow Dash face, or the unaltered Daring Do face? This isn't a question of favourite character, but of technique. It people prefer the more contoured needle-sculpted face (Rainbow Dash's), I'll start doing that with all my ponies (though it'll probably look better and more symmetrical [especially around the mouth] as I practice more and hone my methods). But if people prefer the smoother, more continuous curves of the chin and nose (Daring Do's) then I'll just continue as I am. Go here to vote [link] !Β

I remember thinking that the first time they showed Daring Do. Until season 4, I figured it was supposed to be Rainbow's projection of herself in the books.

Luckily for me you wrote the differences. Oherwhise,Β  i'll never got them. I was so focused on the eyes, i forgot the rest of the face. The differences are minimal and if i have the money ill buy both. Besides on this small difference the main purchase driver will be the pony chraracter. I'll do it that way.

Thanks!

And, yep, they're custom! Made the pattern, digitized the embroidery cut and sewed the ponies myself.

Haha, they kind of bother me too. Didn't turn out quite as I hoped. I was kind of shooting for a hollowed out look. I'll probably be omitting the nose in the future.

Icesticker In reply to Lykaios-Avery [2013-05-26 04:45:25 +0000 UTC]

At least in my opinion it where the nose starts to go out of the end it looks to sharp. It looks like the angle could have been a tiny bit more sloped, not much but just enough to get rid of the sudden cut out of the face look that it has. That is just my personal opinion. I would not complain about either of them if I had one.

Blasphemy! 'Tis the Philosopher's stone! Haha, I read the Canadian editions. Do they actually call it the Sorcerer's stone in the US printings? I thought it was just for the title. It sort of loses its connections to real life and history though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

bannylou In reply to Lykaios-Avery [2013-05-26 03:46:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, the book and movie calls it the Sorcerer's stone, though.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lykaios-Avery In reply to bannylou [2013-05-26 04:21:42 +0000 UTC]

Interestingly enough, that's only the case in the US. They edited it because they thought kid's wouldn't want to read a book that had the word 'philospher' in the title, so Rowling suggested a different title (though she claims to have regretted the change and wishes she had fought against it). I think it's a bit of a shame considering there was a real Nicolas Flamel and he really did work on making a philosopher's stone, so that tie to history is a bit lost. Though I think they say 'philosopher' in the movie, and only changed the title to match the book. Unless they shot the scenes twice. Once for the US version, and the other time for everyone else. There are other little edits in the US edition as well, such as changing 'mum' to 'mom' and 'crumpets' to 'muffins'.

As far as I'm aware, all the other English editions (Canada, Australia, etc.) keep the text and titles of the original UK editions.

I think the needle sculpted mouth is better, maybe without the bridge of the nose being altered, then again I'm biased because I love needle sculpting mouths. >D

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lykaios-Avery In reply to Shamblezz [2013-05-26 03:41:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure how to explain it... It's using thread anchored at certain points to give more shape the face. The tension of the pulled thread can be used to bring eyes closer together, or add more definition to a mouth. Stuff like that.

I prefer the needle sculpting on Dash's nose, but the underside/mouth is better on Daring - this isn't necessarily a reflection that you need more practice, I just prefer the smoother mouth, but the indented nose

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lykaios-Avery In reply to MusePony [2013-05-16 10:36:06 +0000 UTC]

My problem is that I'm undecided. I prefer the smooth, more show-accurate looking shape to Daring's head, but I do like the fact that Rainbow's mouth is more defined and that I can guarantee that. The smile on Daring is how I've always done it, but the visibility can vary a bit from pony to pony.

I do need a bit more practice though, and I usually need to do things twice to make the major changes, then it's little tweaks from there on out. As it turns out, 2 of the people for whom I'm working on ponies like the sculpting, so I'm going to try and strike a happy medium between the two styles when I do theirs, then maybe ask everyone's opinion again.
