Okay, so my mom is actually the one that got me into ponies and I never would have sculpted a single pony if not for her so anyone that likes my ponies should be thankful to her for that. So she started collecting G1 ponies a long time ago and has had thousands of them and even painted her classic car with a pony on the hood and trunk!!! It is Butterscotch, her favorite. So this Christmas I made her favorite pony as a Friendship Is Magic pony as a gift. She loved it!!! Here she is...I hope you like it too!Merry Christmas mom...I love you.

Wow this is really well done. The pose is light and bouncy, the facial expression is spot on and the sculpt is super smooth. Congrats!

Thank you again! Yeah, I spent a lot of time fine tuning this one because it was for my mom. Butterscotch is her favorite pony. I even sanded the body down completely which is something i almost never do. The only thing wrong with this one is the gold mane and tail just would not blend right. I lightened the gold with pearl and blended it for about 30 minutes but as you can see the color is inconsistent and I have no idea why because 30 minutes was more than enough blending but....anyway, yeah, I think it turned out pretty well and my mom loved it

I've also had a lot of trouble getting metallic paints to blend properly, especially with non-metallic ones.
There always seems to be streaks of metallic pigments in the brush strokes :/

What kind do you use? I use DecoArt Dazzling Metallics and they seem to mix pretty well when I do it. The only one that doesn't seem to stay mixed is their Metallic Pearl that i used on this one so I don't use it much. But their blues and purple metallics that I use on Luna mix really well from my experience.
Yeah, this is one of my favorite poses as well. It looks really natural

I mostly use Vallejos Model Air range as I airbrushed a lot on my Luna. But it works great with a regular brush as well and because the pigments are so finely ground they work great for tiny details without "clogging". But I think the mixing problem has to do with it's a very thin paint and some of metallic pigments tend to float on top the others. Not a problem when airbrushing though.

That makes sense. Though I have never tried airbrushing, I know a little about the paint and the consistency. I pretty much knew you airbrushed that Luna because of the lack of brush strokes, but mainly because of the eyes. I guess there might be some people that could paint an ee like that with a brush but no many people could do it that well with a brush. Even with an airbrush it would take some practice!!!
You know, it's funny...Groovebird didn't like the fact that I said the style of sculpting he does is easier and commented that I shouldn't say things i know nothing about. Well, I do know about sculpting with dense styrofoam and I have done it many times...just not with ponies. The reason i say it's funny is this...why would you get upset if someone said the way you do something is easier> Isn't that what we all strive for? An easier way to achieve something? I know I don't like to take the long way to do something. I never got into sculpting ponies with styrofoam because that is his thing but I do find it easier...which is a good thing!!! I wasn't trying to insult him, just sharing my opinion on why some of these take longer than others based on my experience. So yeah, from what I know, without having actual experience, your reasons for the airbrushing make perfect sense. I have sprayed (from a can) metallic paint into a cup to paint on with a brush and it does the same thing you describe

I actually did make the eyes using regular paintbrushes. I only have access to a single-action airbrush so I can't do any serous detail work with it.
It was easier than i thought actually, just a lot of blending and thinning of the paint.
I've also worked a bit with these kinds of foams making product prototypes and while it's very easy to get the right shape, I find making small details to be very tricky.
Besides, I like the more solid feel that you get with clay.
Groovebird is still very skilled at what he does, don't get me wrong.

WOW!!!! I am impressed! Those eyes are beautiful. I could never get that fine. Do you work under a magnifying lens? I should but I don't...I just strain my eyes.
I too like the solid feel of clay. That is really the main reason I stick with it. Yeah, I told him he makes a magnificent Luna, but he seems to want to take an issue only with the fact that I said it is easier. Fine detail in dense styrofoam can be tricky but to me in the long run it is still easier. Not only that, but you don't really have to fight gravity like you do with clay to connection points on foam can be very tiny where clay has to have a larger structure to support the weight while cooking. Anyway, like you, I like the solid feel of clay and will stick with it.

Nope, eye strain for me too I'm afraid.
Sometimes it feels like I'm cross-eyed for several hour after working on something tiny
At least I usually have good lightning...

I have pretty terrible lighting as well. I think my vision has gotten worse just in the last year from these ponies!!! I am working on a pretty nice Cadance though
