Oil on canvasboard, 14"x10", 2007

I have never, ever attempted a nighttime painting of this type - it has always been way beyond my abilites...however I'm allowing myself to be quite fond if this...
Revealing the same spirit in art in the portrayl of characters from my novel always terrifes my as I always fear I'll won't be able to get that spirit accross...

I love the form. It caught my eye. Is it a small painting? I know how hard it is to get details with oils (I recently started with them) but I think this could use some detailing. Maybe a few clouds in the sky or something. I don't quite know. I really like it, though. I hope you do more like this.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Maeix2 In reply to Aryenne [2007-03-25 13:14:58 +0000 UTC]

thanks for the detailed comment. I'm glad it caught your eye...

It's not that small really, says 14x10" in the comment...
hehe...to be honest it turned out more detailed than I had planned. I was trying to go for a kind of night morphing into a horse shape kind of feel, but as you rightly pointed out, I didn't manage quite what I was looking for and the whole painting became much brighter than originally intended...sigh!

Best of luck with your oils, they can be a very temperamental medium

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aryenne In reply to Maeix2 [2007-03-25 18:48:08 +0000 UTC]

That's how it goes sometimes. I have a hard time getting details with oils, and I usually use 16X20 canvases, I still think it looks great, and I'm glad you like detailed comments!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Maeix2 In reply to Aryenne [2007-03-25 20:05:55 +0000 UTC]

thanks

16x20 is very large indeed...that's got to take you ages to finish...

hmm...generally it seems that the best way to get details in oils is
a) to work on a *huuuge* canvas (but who has room for that?)
b) to use layers - just as much digital art does. of course, the downside is that you usually have to let the layer dry before painting on it again, but it does mean that the paint doesn't smear out, loose details or edges...of course it also means it takes quite a while to finish a single piece

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aryenne In reply to Maeix2 [2007-03-27 01:16:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. Huge canvases jump up quite a bit in price too; I've checked! I have tried with layers, too. That seems to work okay, but you're dead-on about the time-table with it. Oh, well. It's still fun, right?

Maeix2 In reply to Aryenne [2007-03-27 01:23:26 +0000 UTC]

have you tried canvasboard? they're a lot cheaper than stretched canvas.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aryenne In reply to Maeix2 [2007-03-27 04:32:45 +0000 UTC]

I have. I've used a couple, and will continue to, but I kinda like the feel of a canvas more. I don't know. You prefer the canvasboard?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Maeix2 In reply to Aryenne [2007-03-27 09:21:15 +0000 UTC]

They take quite some time getting used to...
I used to prefer *real* canvas, and only stumbled onto the boards because mum brought some home one day. I didn't like them, they required such a different technique to produce the same result...but after I moved out and had to buy my own, canvasboards became the order of the day a) they're a lot cheaper b) they store away real nicely c) you can lean your hand on them when painting without the picture distorting

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Aryenne In reply to Maeix2 [2007-03-28 01:09:34 +0000 UTC]

That is very true. I figured I will probably go between both. I have a stack of canvases, though, it would be nice to eliminate piles like that! Thank you for the advice!

Phoenix-Cry In reply to Maeix2 [2007-03-22 22:22:38 +0000 UTC]

Black paint is such a pain in the butt! Although have you ever tried Payne's Grey? It's better than Lamp Black, or Ivory Black, it is a really really dark indigo that gives a nice rich warm black if applied strong.

There is no shame in publishing on DA! My stuff will proably never see the light of print other than here!

Maeix2 In reply to Phoenix-Cry [2007-03-22 22:33:11 +0000 UTC]

I agree wholeheartedly! I try avoid painting in black altogether, it's just such a dead colour...Everything in this pic is made up of preussian blue and mixed white...never heard of Payne's grey, but if it's that good I'll keep an eye out for it...

Guess I'm still a little nervous about someone stealing my charcters and created world for themselves...

Phoenix-Cry In reply to Maeix2 [2007-03-22 22:46:33 +0000 UTC]

Payne's Grey rocks!! You will love it!

I used to fear someone stealing my stuff. But then one day I realized that no one was getting to enjoy my work due to that fears. So I figured 'what the hell?' the risks are worth the reward if I can just entertain a few people. And if someone does steal it they'll never truely love it as their own the way I do.

yeah, it's sunny here too, I can't believe it - it went from midwinter to avarage summer in less than a week. sunshine....ooo how I have missed it.

well, if you're truly desperate you could have a look at Flight of the Hawk (though if you want to get right into the story, I'd go directly to ch:2)...it's not fanfiction, and in my eyes nowhere near Phenoix's standard, but it's not compeletly awful (though it has its moments of lousy writing a.k.a action scenes)

Haven't been on-line today until now, have been stuck in traffic most of the day....If you had any idea how much I detest roadworks by now...

Ah blessed roadworks - just got rid of some pesky ones near me - three months of holdups to and from work Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I don't think any of us are near Phoenixs' standard!!! And have you read Pegasus' stuff with Daniel and Vala? I'm scared! Makes me wonder why I even bother writing! LOL

I'll go peek...and if I like, you'll know about it!
