Description Anyone dropping by expecting to se a blue police box shaped bag is going to be seriously disappointed as that is not the reason it's called the Tardis bag, Any Whovian will know that the TARDIS is smaller on the outside and the same applies to this bag which is why my bf named it the Tardis bag.

It's a bag that's small enough to be considered the second carry on bag for Ryanair but big enough to carry all I need. This is the most complicated bag I've ever made.

Starting from the back with the white zip: a pocket to keep tickets, passport and alternate currency. It's made with the same fabric as the outer cover so if you have it open it looks like there is a hole in the bag.
The next slot does not yet have a new bag made for it but by sheer coincidence (as I didn't measure) my Travel sewing bag fits in this slot
In the next slot is space for the green patchwork cover with my tablet inside.
In the next slot is space for my Lego folding umbrella, a D ring fixed to the side to clip my keyring and public transport travel card . 3 pockets for phone and other stuff, camera and still is only half full at this point.
In the next slot is space for the orange patchwork cover with my nook and in a separate slot made by sewing along the layers is space for my glasses which are fully protected from bumps and breakage.
In the next slot with a partition is space for the black pouch covered in colonial knots: cables for the nook, tablet and phone, it can fit in either the larger bit or in the smaller section. I usually have a bottle of water in that smaller section though so tje pouch usually lives at the bottom of the larger section. also in that larger section goes peppermints and purse also with space to spare for other things.

Fully loaded with all my stuff it weighs in at 4 kg/8.8 pounds.

For the curious I have uploaded an image of all the sections I made for this bag - each with the thick interfacing as part of the structure to make it stand up independently AND protect what's inside. The sections are in the correct order with the white zip to the left. Yes, I sew with red thread when it's not going to show.. for some reason I have about 20 spools of it that need using up lol.

What it's made of:

My super special and much loved rainbow fabric on the inside - it's a Hoffman print.
Hoffman Bali batiks - mostly scraps (the entire outer cover for example was made with scraps leftover from making the woodpile quilt )
The covers and pouches are lined with misc quilting weight fabrics.
Batting
Thick interfacing to give it "umpf"
Loads of zips
Magnetic sew on button

The stats:
The bag: 11 1/2" wide x 7 1/4" high x 6 3/4" deep / 29.2 x 18.4 x 17.1 cm
The cable pouch: 7" wide x 3 1/4" high x 2" deep / 17.8 x 8.3 x 5 cm
The nook cover: 6 1/2" wide x 7 1/4" high x 3/4" deep / 16.5 x 18.4 x 1.9 cm
The tablet cover: 11" wide x 7 1/2"high x 3/4" deep / 27.9 x 19 x 1.9 cm
Time needed to make: about 2 weeks of lots of sewing with the last few days of creating the bag being almost non stop sewing.
Plotting time: about a month but not continuously - this bag took a lot of pre-planning before I even started sewing due to the restrictions of Ryanair and the things I wanted the bag to be able to carry.

Thing I learnt form making the bag:
Don't use lots strips of fabric to make a shoulder strap - they tend to grow as the seams stretch - the more seams the more stretch and my bag strap grew 6" (15 cm)

I love the idea. I think my niece would love this as she travels a lot, though I'd probably go with more staid fabrics for her.

IF I actually get started and do nothing else (no other crafting that is) it takes around 2 weeks

It's quite complicated to make - it's basically several bags in one.

This is amazing and inspiring - I am somewhat of a bag addict and always in search of that "perfect one" especially for travelling. Β I might just have to consider going the DIY route after seeing this.

Aww thanks

Travelling really doe shave it's own very personal requirements. If you do end up going the DIY route I am happy to help you brainstorm/come up with a plan/help work out how to do stuff

xD I really do!! I love to take all my creative equipment whenever I go somewhere so I fully understand the need for a bag like this! I keep trying to think of a way to crochet something for all my hooks and needles, but I might have to dip into the murky waters of sewing for that xD

Your stuff is a great source of inspiration!

Yeah I do too which is why I made my sewing bag some years ago - partly by hand and partly by machine. Zips at that time were rather less scary than jumping off a cliff but not by much

Most of bag making is straight lines - and wrapping your brain around multidimensional planes, which as a knitter you might already be good at

I don't think that a crocheted bag will keep needles or hooks corralled for long as they will try to escape through the holes, even with a smaller size hook used for the job. However a fabric backed crochet work would do the trick and could be done by hand quite easily as it's not much different than sewing 2 panels together after knitting them though if you cut the fabric so that when the seam allowance is folded over it's a smidge smaller than the crochet you could corchet the peices together after attaching the fabric to the insides - or back. (i've done quite a bit of crochet - and some knitting but it's not my favourite thing to do)

I'm so glad I can help inspire people - it's not what i set out to do - I just like making things but I'm glad I can in some small way help people get idea's

Yeah, I avoid zippers like the plague xD I really should get over it soon though.

I made a bag a while ago, fully crocheted, and had a fabric inside to it but the strain on parts of the yarn was too much and the thread has snapped and it's slowly falling apart so I need to take the shoulder strap apart and put a piece of fabric on it to keep it from stretching and breaking the bag. I'm thinking that a sturdy fabric will help keep the bag in shape and make the strap less stretchy and break-y.Β

For my hooks I'm thinking something in the lines of a roll, to make it easy to bring anywhere or in anything. Maybe a crocheted outside with a neat pattern and a fabric inside that keeps all the utensils in place would work? ( I dabble in sewing but somehow it's jut s tad scary too me xD I'm working on getting into it more though, since it's great to use together with other sorts of crafting.)

You are also very nice to talk with! Not to mention helpful! Thank you!

A good way to deal with zippers is to first sew a strip of fabric to either side of the zip, one at a time to both the top and the bottom and then take it from there - this means you don't have to struggle with the zip with a larger bit of the project which I personally find to be the worst part of putting them in.

You are correct this would indeed help - if you want a crocheted strap you could always slide some fabric inside it to add stability and reduce stretch

Yes that would definitively work I used to find sewing terrifying myself but I liked making things too much to not keep trying and eventually I got used to it and sewing quilts certainly made me better

Aww thanks I am always happy to help people if I can, I think knowledge should be shared and sometimes one person can "see" how to do something while another can't and it's fun plotting how to do something with others

Kinicha In reply to Magical525 [2014-08-31 12:06:01 +0000 UTC]

So then I attache the fabric to the project and not the zipper? That'd be good if you need to change the zip later on, you can just remove it from the fabric instead of ruining tour project?

I made two straps and then crocheted them together for the sturdier feel and comfort, so I should be able to just slide an extra fabric-strap inside it.the strap is also the sides and bottom of the bag, so a piece of fabric should be good!

I started warming up to sewing again when I realized how much better a bag is with a fabric inside. It just can't be beat when it's something you want to use often.

Sharing knowledge is great! and often just another persons opinion on a project is enough to kickstart it in your mind! Thanks again for the help!

yes For a visual of how to sew the fabric to the zip look here: (just need to pretend the strips of fabric are the width of the bag + seam allowance) www.designsponge.com/2010/09/s… then all you need to do is include the 2 unsewn long sides into the seams of the project and you have your zip in and it's easier to swap zips at a later stage.

Yep exactly

Yes fabric does make things sturdier and avoids smaller stuff getting lost.

Indeed You are welcome!

Ahhhh, do you have any kind of a pattern at all? I would /love/ to make a bag like this! The only thing that would make it better would be a place for a knitting project!

Magical525 In reply to yarngirl [2014-08-04 11:10:46 +0000 UTC]

I have a pile of notes i scribbled on but a lot was make it up as you go along measuring what I had before continuing. If you make the bag wider and left out say the front pocket it would be big enough for knitting and everything else

I shall see if I can make something usable from what I have though

Not sure it would be something I could sell - it won't be *that* detailed as it would be instructions on how to make a bag to suit what you want to take with you places. Not sure yet how I will deal with it but I'll think of something, I've written quite a few patterns in the past, some of which have been printed so I know how to explain things properlyΒ
