Description Amidst the chaos following the Vong War, Maarek Stele set out to design a fighter that would embody his personal philosophy of a space superiority fighter.

One of the key features of the TIE HIMAT was its unique variable wing system, which allowed unprecedented changes to the configuration of the fighter mid flight. The ability of the fighter to radically shift its profile and appearance in mid flight had a significant impact beyond the immediate advantages it provided in maneuverability. The constantly shifting nature of the fighter proved to have a significant psychological effect on opposing pilots.

Depicted here are 3 commonly used wing configurations.

Config A, at top left, was primarily used for Atmospheric combat and was designed to increase the aerodynamic properties of the fighter.

Config B, at top right, was generally used to reduce target profile and as a segue into other configurations.

Config C, at bottom, was used primarily for boosting speed at the expense of maneuverability, using the maneuvering thrusters to contribute to the overall speed. This setting was also the primary storage configuration of the fighter.

Did you, by chance, take inspiration from the TIE Predator from Legends?Β

To me, it looks like a Predator with both panels bisected with each half-panel given mobility in at least 4 axes (3 in the angle and rotation of the panel relative to its attachment point, and one from the movement of the attachment point around the cockpit).

When a TIE HiMaT is facing off against an X-Wing pilot, I have a feeling that using the wings to imitate the position and movement of the S-Foils of an X-Wing could have some kind of psychological effect.

Also, I assume that the wing formation of the HiMaT in your first picture is for maximum general mobility in vacuum.

...reasonable nickname from opposing snubfighter pilots... ..."Shift"...

Now that I think about it, this reminds me of the Legends Ugly called the chir'daki. Rather precisely made, and surprisingly reliable for an Ugly, the chir'daki consisted of the wings of an X-Wing attached to the capsule of a TIE Fighter by a rail around the entire cockpit. This allowed for free control of the wings to anywhere on that rail, though they lacked the rotational capability of the TIE HiMaT's wings.

There seems to be a problem with config B on the top right though. Because compared to the other configurations, the Ion Engine wings are inverted or look upside down, and it seems the only way for them get to that configuration is to rotate the wings in a near 180 degree. I cannot tell how it works but the joints that are holding the wings would have to be sticking out or exposed to make the configuration logical since the wings look inverted.

Its been several years and it still looks fresh and new. You should contribute these designs to the new film makers of the new Trilogy. I think the First Order's most elite pilots deserve to fly something like this. Or more specifically the HIMAT itself deserves to be in service of the First Order pilots of the new Trilogy.

For those of you who want to be of some help to other Star Wars fans who show their love and commitment to the franchise that Lucas and the brilliance of talented authors like Kevin J Anderson, Timothy Zahn, and the late Aaron Allston please show your support by clicking on the link below and donating some money to help continue the Expanded Universe under the Legends banner.

This is the fighter Prince Xizor wishes he could own. Β

...or rather, what he would wish he could own. Seeing as his existence just got tossed down the drain by Disney and all. Β  No I'm not still bitter about that, why do you ask?

Seriously, though, fantastic work on this piece. ^^

Actually a source of inspiration for this.

Wow, it has wings that change shape. It seems like they took some inspiration from the X-wings.

It was subconscious on my part, but almost certainly. When I modeled it, I initially had the wings in the position shown here: magyareagle.deviantart.com/art…
Which indeed bears similarity to them.
I actually am going to remake the ships since the original meshes were lost in the great hard drive crash 2 years ago.

Neat little ship! I think config B (wings folded back) would allow it to land.

where is the Exit of the cockpit ? Β =S

Cockpit door folds out forward I really makes me regret loosing the source file due to a hard disk crash, as there is so much more detailing I would love to have done.

While the design is nice, I eespecially like that the name sounds like "Tiamat", which I guess could be fitting.

Lol, that's a hilarious coincidence that I hadn't considered. The ship was named after the Rockwell HiMAT test aircraft. But you're absolutely right, it fits!

Configuration B wouldn't reduce the profile unless the wings are some how reducing the ability of detection systems to track and identify the vehicle.

But I do like the design, although it's too small to be a superiority fighter.

Where are the guns?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MagyarEagle In reply to EbolaSparkleBear [2012-01-24 16:08:10 +0000 UTC]

The guns are located on the top, bottom and left/right sides of the cockpit, The primary armament being the 4 blaster cannons located on the left and right sides. They are the boxes that protrude from the frame. You are right that it wouldn't reduce target profile, but I also imagined it as activating ECM measures if installed in that particular config. I would think though that compared to the primary wing config, as seen in this image: [link] it would present a smaller profile from the rear.

Thanks for your comment! I love hearing your opinions

Heh, I like this. A very neat design. Though I'm worried about how strong the wing mounts would have to be to support those wings under combat conditions.

It seems to me that the Config A's top wings aren't very aerodynamic. If they looked like either C or B's config it would look more believable. Otherwise very nice.
