Description This pic is taking longer than I expected to get through so I'll leak another little bit here. I tried a different coloring technique than usual here, first laying down a layer of fully-rendered grayscale and then trying to somehow glaze color over it. It turns out Photoshop does not make that a particularly easy job. I'm fairly happy with the results, although I failed at saving any time with this technique. This part might not be entirely done, I'll probably tweak it more once it's placed within the final composition. Until then, hope you like this.

Awesome colouring. Really original use of airbrushy goodness. I really like seeing this, especially with DA awash with painterly rip offs. Great stuff. Hell, Fave!

Yeah, I've sorta tried applying a more painterly appraoch to stuff here and there, but until I finally get a tablet it just isn't gonna work. Anyway I'm not from a painting background, but a pencilling one, so I generally prefer smoother rendering. I did this as a grayscale render first to pin down all the values, and then worked color into it, which is different from any of my totally digital render work. Probably my main inspiration behind using that technique on this pic was Travis Charest.

Actually, I managed to get by without one to get a more painterly effect with a few of my noob experiments. But it's not worth it for more than 2 attempts. I think that you'll get tired of using a mouse very quickly for the painterly stuff. I definitely agree with you on the tablet thing.

I've seen that tutorial. He uses inkwash to create the grey tones, then goes over it in acrylic or something. Yeah, but Travis Charest also takes his sweet arse time. I'm still waiting for that Metabarons comic he was working on since 2002!

Did I tell you I met Travis Charest at a comic con over the summer? He's a pretty cool guy. He told me that Jodorowsky was the nicest old man you'll ever meet, which blows my mind after reading and watching his work. Charest was on a panel with Adam Hughes, Bryan Hitch, Tim Sales, and a couple other guys. It rocked.
But still damn him for going so sloooooow. When that book finally comes out I'm gonna celebrate like it's my birthday.

No. No, you haven't. Did I ever mention: "die bitch!"? No? Dammit. XD

Yeah. I want to see his metabarons stuff. I didn't pick up the alpha/omega book either. I have to track that down. Gah. It's been too long since I've seen his work. It's really painful to wait for new stuff whenever I'm reminded of his works.

Oh man, I tried that glazing over grayscale once, and the results still haunt my nightmares to this day...
Yours came out fantastic however, you must have the patience of a saint!
I love the cloth wrinkles on her skirt, too.
Exceptional work, as always!

If you go through my earlier works you'll find some less-than-perfect examples of glazing over grayscale (pencils at that!). For example, the Vegeta-Bulma drawing was glazed over with less than sensational results. However I figured out a couple helpful techniques for making it work better this time. For one, try coloring over your grays on a multiply layer with whatever colors you want, then duplicate that layer and set it to overlay (I believe it was that). That will cause your grays to be colored the same as your multiply layer, so it won't muddy up so badly. A second duplicate layer set to "color" will enhance the colors further.

Thanks! This is only one of three figures I'm working on, and once they're done I'm putting them on top of a background to complete the overall image. Hopefully it won't take two or three weeks to get to that point.

Also, something about this drawing reminds me of the character paintings from the opening sequence to "Justice League Unlimited." It's unintentional, but I like it because I like those illustrations.

Thank you kindly. It took a little while to get it straight, but I woudln't necessarily call it suffering. I would if it turned out I couldn't use the rendering at all and had to start over again, which for a short while I believed would be the case. Buttercup is the spicier one, the other two will be a little sweeter looking.

That's the plan. I started the base coloring for Blossum earlier tonight, but I don't know if she and Bubbles will be done very soon. I spent three days on this girl alone, so it might be a while.

Sweet. You need to start selling prints of this stuff so I can start up a collection.

mallaard In reply to misterkitsch [2006-09-03 21:05:13 +0000 UTC]

I tried that, but I didn't sell anything, excpet to you. If I go back to the con next year, I'm just gonna sell a book of my pictures. I think people are more willing to spend money on a book than on an individual print, especially if I can manage to price it low. I'd want it to be full color though, so it might be difficult to print a run that I could make a profit on for about five to ten dollars a pop.

misterkitsch In reply to mallaard [2006-09-03 21:48:56 +0000 UTC]

I think t-shirts are the way to go. For some reason most people won't spend ten dollars for a nice print but they'd spend twenty for an OK t-shirt. People are weird.

I still think it would be nice for you, me, Eric, Ty, and whoever else to start up a website where we showcase our work and sell prints, books, t-shirts and whatnot. Heather's joining this "art-o-mat" thing where she sells little pieces of art out of a cigarette style vending machine that sounds pretty cool.

mallaard In reply to misterkitsch [2006-09-03 23:45:17 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard of that "art-o-mat" thing, but Eric seems familiar with it. Sounds kinda lucrative, is she making any kind of profit from it yet? I personally haven't seen these machines, but Eric says Greenville has them.
All of us having a website would probably be a good thing. You'll have to talk with Eric about setting it up, being as I have no experience dealing with setting up websites. If you and Eric could get one started, we could add Ty and anyone else later on down the road if he's not quite ready for it. Of course we've been talking about this idea for several years now, so it would probably take some supreme act of courage and dedication to finally get the ball rolling.

misterkitsch In reply to mallaard [2006-09-04 23:21:48 +0000 UTC]

I don't know how lucrative the art-o-mat thing is because Heather just started it but it sounds pretty fun making vending machine viddles. I think Heather did mention there being one in Greenville when she was reading stuff off of the website [link]

I think for the website I'm just going to design something and have everyone look at it and we'd start from there I guess. What's a good name for all of our collaborative efforts?

At the convention Eric came up with "Free Will Press" for our table name. That could be a start, though possible we can come up with something catchier later on. I'm pretty sure this website can only begin with one person's dramatic act of determination, and that person may well be you. Godspeed!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

misterkitsch In reply to mallaard [2006-09-05 23:18:13 +0000 UTC]

"Free Will Press?" I like it. Mainly because it has the word "Will" in it. Hmm, how do you feel about "Free Will Jardine Press" or better yet, "Will Jardine Kicks Ass ... um, Studios."

I think I'm going to throw some page layouts together in photoshop, post them as a deviation and have you guys look at them and let me what you think. Other than that I think a really good starting point would be for everyone to think about what kind of content we're going to have on the site. That way we could work up a sitemap and from there, hopefully get the ball rolling.
