Description Helmet & gorget. The feathers detail is there just for fun, I most likely wont include it in the final model.

did you do the feathers using planes?

Yes, planes with a feather texture (diffuse & transparency map)

fine feathers. How'd you do them?

The feathers are a particle system of simple plane (subdivided a bit & "rounded") objects, with a hand painted feather texture (diff & alpha)

This is a really great piece overall. How did you make the feathers?

MatejMo In reply to kobaltkween [2012-08-13 16:53:47 +0000 UTC]

Feathers are particle system with a simple object (2x subdivided plane, curved a bit). The textures are alpha & diffuse map fast & dirty painted in GIMP. I used a procedural noise to mix the color a bit more.

Feathers or not, it's fantastic work!

Very nice! Have you considered using a displacement map on the chainmail? The silhouette looks really smooth there, a little bumpiness would go a long way to selling it as a real thing rather than a surface quality.

In the software I use, displacement would need real geometry, so its not really feasible - the polycount is already getting high. But the chain-mail material and the object is not fine-tuned yet (in these wips I used the mail just to provide some context), so I'll still improve it.

Thanks!

you're such a pro! have you ever made any tutorials?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatejMo In reply to TomCadogan [2012-08-12 15:48:26 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

I've made some tutorials for the Yafaray render engine a while back, but they are more a "technical how-to use", rather than "how to create content".

Though, I had in mind to make a tutorial on how to create the textures for the chain mail I used here. If I do anything, I'll post info here for sure.

Really like the buckle detail. Very nice work overall, fits into the rest of the armor pretty nicely.

The feathers might be extreme the way they currently are, but I'd add some feathers or other detail in the final.
Less aggressive white/red feathers maybe or even violet/yellow.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll do some variations of the feathers and see how it will come out.
