Not sure if anyone got it yet, but the whole scenario points to the issue 'Price of Life' from the old Marvel run, where Optimus hired Nightbeat to find Ratchet after he sacrificed himself to stop Megatron and vanished into in a space bridge, only to bring back a horrible fusion of Ratchet and Megatron. This was also around the time Pretenders came out...so it seems the reverse is happening here! Great art by the way.

I did take inspiration from the Star Trek transporter accidents (I was thinking the episode with the two Kirks in particular), but the reference I was being coy about is to something in the old Transformers comics. If you want to see, check the early comments in this thread: JazZeke got the answer.

is it the one where the guy gets seperated into two indentities after the transporter accident and they have to put him back together again?

the only thing is i know that nightbeat's new look and the two sprungs are from timelines n classics, and maybe the event is that the springer in This universe has gone, like in the armada comics, happened with Optimus, and they re trying to search for him? [link]
sorry for thr whole bla-bla, its just a stupid quessing.

I hope someday there's a story where a Trans-Time Dimensional Portal malfunction causes a crossover with the Shattered Glass universe.

ha! that's an awesome concept! and teleportation accidents are almost as great as flame-retardent foam. jk seriously though that's an awesome way to tie the toys together into the classics universe.
and as always, your artwork is amazing. i would SO love this as a print.

Thank you! And, hey, what's up man? Good to see you again. As for prints, I'm actually considering getting back into that business because I'm practically next door to the Emerald City Comicon, which is growing by leaps and bounds. If I end up running prints of this one, I'll let you know.

I know a lot about Transformers but I have no clue what event you speak of. But I am gonna use my scifi knowledge and general common sense to say it has something to do with a teleportation accident Springer was in that resulted in there being two of him. One which transformers into a helicopter and one that transforms into an armored car. The title would state that something resulted in two of something. Two Springers being in the middle of what looks like some sort of energy output would clearly depict one became two. I don't really see how the background characters make a difference but I must be wrong.

That IS what's going on in the picture, but the reference is to another teleportation-related event in an old Transformers series. In the early comments in this thread, a dude called "JazZeke" got the basic answer.

Never been one for reading Transformers. The story sounds good though. If they would just bring it back on TV and draw them correctly it would be a hit. But these days everyone takes shortcuts and cartoon artwork is horrible.

Thank you! I'm glad the emotion came through - the fact that these robots are full-blown characters and not just mecha is part of what made me a Transformers fan and has kept me one all these years.

Wow, this is not only an awesome piece of art, that is actually an AWESOME concept for the toys!
I have NO idea what the significance of the BG characters are. I know its Nightbeat, Slag and Optimus, but I dunno why they were chosen...

Thank you! I love finding ways to "justify" obscure toys.
And that's not Slag, but you got the other two. If you want to know the answer, check the early comments (look for JazZeke's reply in particular).

Actually it's a more modern Optimus toy (but you'd REALLY have to know your Optimi to tell). You're on the right track with the Marvel thing, though... if you want to know the answer, check the early comments in this thread - dude named "JazZeke" called it.

Thank you! I'm glad you like the colors in particular, since I invested a fair bit of thought into them. Given the loud paint scheme of your average Transformer, it's dangerous to just color them as they are because that can make for a pretty chaotic composition. But TFs are also often defined by their colors, so striking that balance can be tricky. Like I said, I'm glad you think I pulled it off!

Thanks! And for what it's worth, I always thought Springer's "Triple Changer"-ness was pretty lame compared to the other TCs. But both of the new toys are pretty solid designs, and Springer-y enough to get by. I haven't decided which is the evil one yet....

You know, I like the "armored car" Springer toy (and I can't find it! arrgh!), I just don't like the fact that he doesn't deserve anything but Hot Shot's repaint, thats really lame.

I hear you. The thing for me is, I pretty much only collect G1-related toys, so when a good toy like CD Hot Shot gets the G1 treatment, I'm happy to see it. In my eyes, that toy is Springer; its original purpose is secondary to me.
Now, one thing I will say is that I'd still like to see the Springer character appear onscreen again. I liked his quippy sarcasm.
