Description It's done, well as done as it's gonna get. This is my tribute to yet another true Screen legend, and an American Icon...
Mr. Clark Gable, most famous for, of course, his role as Rhett Butler in "Gone With the Wind." (Hence the title.)

Darkened all the areas I felt needed that little oomph, and used both a 6B, and a 9B.(Hope you can see some of the differences.) But now is the time I want at least one of those "OH MY GOD" kind of reactions. (and really mean it, not just to appease me.)

But all told, I spent a total of about 20 hours on this one..a new p.r. for me.
Graphite,
Tissues, torts, and cotton for shading and blending
Drawn on 11x14 paper, (image is 8x11)

I have to say, I am extremely pleased with the results, and yeah, I think it's one of the better ones I have done. So obviously I want to know what everyone thinks, let me know.

Till next time, remember...Big People are people too...

mattyrich In reply to ellastasia [2007-06-12 05:32:31 +0000 UTC]

Oh, not just the opposite, the "black sheep." I mean my brothers have normal jobs...Ryen is a car salesman (yeah, i've heard all those comments too) and David is a chemistry teacher...(see, he followed my dad.) And I am proud of both of them in thier own ways. Me, I'm not a 9-5'er. more of a when I get to it-when I'm finished for the night'er. I mean I do have a job , (that I haven't been to since november 29...(when all my health things just decided to go nuts) and I'm sure I haven't been fired yet because it's illegal..but I will be when I do go back....but I'm just not cut out for that kind of "normal" life. I think I did it to appease my ex at the time..and be a normal guy...but ya know..it drove me nuts, made me depressed, and sometimes I couldn't sleep. And the job sucked too...lol...

ellastasia In reply to mattyrich [2007-06-12 17:26:28 +0000 UTC]

ooh yikes about the job! i haven't been back to work nov. either! except my reason was i was giving birth! and hey really i totally understand about the 9-5 blah job, my husband refuses to be a part of it and we make it just fine! and my fathers got no choice and he hates it so i don't blame you, he was telling me all about the corporate world the other day and i thought i would like it but...after he explained it, ah dunno it sounds like a lot of pointless crap and drama that you can't help but get involved in. that sucks! So i'll just be a full-time mom... and hey, i don't know where you stand and i don't want to offend no one--and i know you know better anyway! --but don't compromise anything!! it's not worth it in the long run, it never is, and you'll come out happier!

I just do it for the benefits...cause obviously, I need the medical...and soon the dental...I gotta get to the dentist before my trip I think...but anyway...my dad was a corporate type too...and it drove him nuts half of the time...but, and this may sound bad, because of my dad's hard work..he afforded us the freedoms to explore what we really wanted to do. He always said, that what he did...yeah, it sucked sometimes..but it was his thing....and he loved it...and wanted us to feel the same...

I'm sorry, I put you on the list...and then got really tired so I forgot to comment. But, I love your use of color in your pics. That is a fear I have not yet gotten over...colors. I'm pretty much over the going to dark with graphite (as observed in this particular picture....) and the fear of making a mistake...(eh, so what, I've done it before...just start over again....), but color...still gives me the hee bee gee bees....or the bee hee bee gees...whichever you prefer.

I love Clark Gable and you have drawn him perfectly! I really love how they used to photograph stars in the 30's and the 40's. Those photographs are some of the best reference pictures I've seen!

mattyrich In reply to khinson [2007-05-03 23:49:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, like I said sometime earlier..(I don't know, i'm one of those people that responds to every comment I get, so I get confused.) But one afternoon, I was sitting around, watching "The Prince and the Showgirl." Laurence Olivier (my mom's favorite) and Marilyn Monroe, and I thought...hey, now there's two pictures I should draw, and I wrote them down, then the list just kept getting bigger and bigger. I still have like 10-15 of those I'm planning on doing...I do love the photo's from back then as well..not only do they make great reference pics (everything is soooo airbrushed out now) but that "class and prestige" look. (well there's that..and no one else seems to draw them...)

They just don't make them like that anymore. I honestly don't know why I started this whole thing....i think i was watching "Prince and the Showgirl" with laurence olivier and marilyn monroe, and just got inspired. Plus, everyone draws the "hot" ones today, many I feel have little or no talent, they just have the "look" someone is looking for. (I mean really, does someone like Lindsey Lohan hold a candle to Audrey Hepburn...my opinion...not in a million years.)

And Gable...well what can you say about the man....he an icon...

Well, thank you my dear, I really appriciate that. I really don't know what's come over me lately, with this whole series. My grandfather did a series years ago of the most influential people in the world from 1900-1950 ( I think...may have been longer) but there was about 30 in that series. (Churchill, Einstien, Roosevelt, etc.) And I have kind of always wanted to be just like him, so that's how this came about. Now, If I could just get people to say they want to by prints....hmmmmm..
