Description iron lungs have always fascinated me. growing up in an era when polio could be misconstrued as a sport rather than a devastating disease, it's hard to imagine anyone going through the horrors that polio rained down on the masses, let alone having to live out the rest of their natural lives in a man-made cavern to do something as simple as breathing.

it's big. it's noisy. it's unsettling and uninviting, its presence commanding... and i think that's why i'm so taken by their shiny exteriors with all their metal gadgets. outside they may be a hard, cold shell, but inside they house something so uniquely precious. they're only here to help.

taken at the museum of surgical science, chicago, illinois.
