I always pick water starters with one big exception. Turtwigs look like Squirtles, and after mourning for Tortoise (recently revived) for so long I wanted a backup Tortoise to keep me company in Sinnoh. Tortoise Sr and his wife Topanga are from incompatible egg groups, and the newly named Tortoise Jr came to them at just the right time. TJ was raised in a cohesive family unit, something most of my Pokémon couldn't experience.
As a full grown champion, TJ decided to take on carpentry and build a permanent home for all his fellow Pokémon, who otherwise live like nomads or beasts. Tortoise Town is a work in progress, and new citizens arrive faster than he can build homes. But he enjoys working with his hands and in the dirt.
