Description A gryphon silhouetted against the sky, made for a friend's livejournal. (Though I used a different background for hers.)

The gryphon silhouette was made by smushing a hawk and snow leopard together, then painting in eartufts. I had to move the hawk's legs forward on its body, and the snow leopard legs were positioned wrong, so I pulled legs off a jaguar and stuck them on the snowpard's haunches. But then the paws were positioned wrong, so I had to chop the paws off and re-angle them.

The end result, before I blacked it all out, looked rather funny. It's in my scraps; the full picture is here .

For the silhouette, I just selected the entire gryphon and replaced it with black on a new layer. Then I used an eraser on the feathers at a low-ish opacity; I think 40% or something, with higher opacity the farther out the feathers went. It was fun. The sky was thrown together. I used lighting effects, layer effects, cloud renders, smudging, varying shades of gray for clouds, and a lot more smudging and blurring until it looked sort-of right. One of these days I'm going to learn how to make decent clouds.

AHHHHHh, that would explain the odd back paws. But overall WOW! And the smudged feathers really REALLY helps. Beautiful sky. Hey, do you want to borrow some of my skyscapes for photo manips like this?

Those are some of the best. Take a gander through and feel free to use the scenary pics... and any of the zoo animals. Just not the Lone Ravens.

That looks awesome!
I love how you combined the different snips of actual photos to create this silhouette. It adds a ton more realism to a creature that doesn't have actual physical manifestation.

Very nice! I love how the oddest picture can make a sweet silhouette.

I saw this earlier today and I thought it was really, really cool. I also saw the chopped up picture in your sig, and I must say that it looked very strange without the silhouette. You did a nice job on this piece. I really like it.
