Just a rough study that... er.. developed.A couple of references used to figure out where the ab muscles went, but other than that, he came right out of my head.
I suspect I'm getting better. What say you?

I type Adam black in the search bar and this is what I get. Which means A) He's who you based your man off of. B) or he is Adam Black. Either way, you made him just as 'make you walk into a wall gorgeous' as the book portrayed him. Bravo.

Okies, I stand corrected and a bit embarassed at my lecturing. The skintones and flesh colours here are just fine. I very much like how the few spots of light on his lips and nose draw attention to his face.

I do like somewhat desaturated colors sometimes (Quicksilver is a good example, or Winter Prince), and then other times I tend to up the saturation and colors (like Salamander, or Cerulean). I have a tendency to stick a bit too close to the "flesh tones" color palette when I shouldn't, and almost everything I know about painting skin I learned from studying Linda Bergkvist's skin tutorials (who we all know is in love with a desaturated palette as well).
Your critique was completely justified, and I admit, in that one I wasn't really trying on the colors as hard as I should have (especially not the background, I didn't want an overly colorful bookshelf (and my bookshelf in that particular nook is *very* colorful) to detract from the rest of the palette and the central figure.
For this one, I wanted some very natural skin tones.
What I'd like to be able to do is those very flushed, pinky/yellow/red complexions that look so infused with light. Maybe I'll tackle that next.

HOLY MOLY BATMAN! I think I just died and went to heaven. I've been working on a romance novel for 2 years now, and this is the first time I've seen anyone who looks the way I picture my main male character looking. He's... gorgeous. XD

You are definitely getting better, but at the same time, you can never have too much practice. You should draw LOTS more men like him. You know, to truly master the craft...or something like that. As long as it's more like him.

*laughs* When I look at your other portraits, I see very similar facial features and expressions. This man just doesn't quite have the sameness that the others posess, though he is still so obviously your style. I think you're skills are subtley expanding and each image you create is becoming more its own picture, rather than just another picture by you. Does that make sense?

Yes. 
It's something I'd been noticing too... that kind of sameness of expression and facial features. It's hard, without a reference to make faces different, because I tend to revert back to a sort of mental stamp of facial features.
This is how you draw a nose... this is how you draw a mouth... eyes go here, jaw like this... you know?
But that's part of my goal for the new year, is to break out of that box... and stop doing so many portraits! If I'm going to do portraits, they'll be for sale. Otherwise, it's time to start applying myself more to more intricate images: backgrounds, lighting, details, etc. And time to get away from hot people staring at the viewer... time to start telling stories.
I'm working on a project soon, with ~quickreaver . We're going to attempt a "Fantasy Bad Boys" Calendar for 2008, so part of my goal is to make my boys sexy, tell their stories visually, and make them all different so it's more like a buffet of men, and not just variations on the same dish.
