Description And one day before the rain
He is searching there again
Where no one ever meets
On the Scarlet Flower Fields

Finally worked up the nerve to attempt to illustrate one of my favorite songs; Scarlet Flower Fields by Vanden Plas [link] . Wasn't very successful, but at least I gave it a shot. It's too splotchy and abstractish, and I hate the figure.... but I still sort of like it (because of the connection to the song?).

Anyway, I wanna see a poppy field in full bloom someday, they're so beautiful.

anyways!! nice attempt!!

Yeah, he's like a recurring archetypal figure or something. Repetitive, yes, I guess that sort of makes me similar to those 'drawing room' artists who paint the same woman over and over again Like a muse I guess?

As for the hair, the music's to blame for that too! Most of my favorite musicians have hair like that

Thank you!

Dude!! Poppy fields are sooo the greatest. @_@ (well, not that I've seen them either . . . I just appreciate them, too)

Not successful? The colors are so stunning! And the composition is soooo nice.

I like the splotchy abstractish-ness! Or actually... its not really splotchy abstracty. But not annoyingly realistic either. Its the... perfect inbetween? Er... at the risk of sounding incredibly cheesy - it seems to capture the mood perfectly? (And well... without listening to the song, it had a very nice 'melancholic prettiness' to it. Em... and now that I'm listening to it now, me god~! Your painting seems so fittingly gorgeous! I love~!!! ^o^ )

As for the figure, I mind it not. The person is very ignorable actually. Which is not a bad thing at all. Good, infact! Since it makes the eye wander back to the prettiness of the fields!

I tried not having the person, but for some reason it balances out the composition? Will try to fix him one day, it's what's majorly bothering me about this. (can't believe so many people like it despite that!)

Melancholic prettiness!? I'm so glad you think so, that's exactly what I was trying to get across X3! My second major concern was if it even looked like a field... I'm so glad it doesn't look too abstractish, and I really don't like super realistic landscapes either, so

Thank you! *heads to bed with an obnoxiously big ego*

Wow! makes a great impact, i think its perfect coz the lighting is spot on! my hubby thinks the sun should be a tad more yellow/coloured, but i think youve really created the feel of expansive feild, silvergold silhouette and the magically warm sunset in this! beautiful! i love it!

Thank you for the lovely compliments, thank your hubby too for me, for pointing that out. Usually the sun does tend to be that color before setting, but I guess I was very tempted to make it that bright :3. I'm glad it doesn't look unnatural though...

Cool! I know I repeat this a lot, but do share some of your recent work with us sometime

Job? Was working at a kids channel back in November, but it went bankrupt :/. So hard finding a fun job. Otherwise life's okay, I'm just not sure what sort of artist I want to be... aaah, okay enough rambling now

Immortelle In reply to merriya [2009-03-31 15:02:08 +0000 UTC]

haha... I understand that part. I had problems with setting my art-priorities too. Got stuck with textile once. Then after that got stuck with CG and character designing. THAT one was so hard to let go I must admit. I still do some designs in spare time but I'm sticking to painting now strictly since that's what I think I should do.

and ugh! I'm so sorry I always disappoint you with my lack of updates --; but Insha-Allah I'll be uploading some real soon. ^^

merriya In reply to Immortelle [2009-03-31 15:22:40 +0000 UTC]

Haha, it's okay... upload stuff whenever you feel like it I was just being impatient and silly.

I'm going through the very same phase :/. I'm torn between whether I want to be an illustrator or a painter. But then I feel guilty when I see all my painter friends exhibiting their work all over the place . A couple of weeks back I even went out and bought a couple of canvases... still haven't touched them :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Immortelle In reply to merriya [2009-04-03 05:43:10 +0000 UTC]

Whoa! It seems like someone is speaking for me instead.... But you know what, I think we can do both. But better stabilize one of them as priority. I'm going for painting since that's what I've been trained at and want to do. So I'll keep on exhibiting for next 2 to 3 years. Then when I'm out and well known in that field... I might get some time out for my character designing too. Hope the plan works though. XD
Meantime I’m trying to keep up with my colleagues. Everyone in my junior years is now exhibiting… It’s so frustrating to know that I’m left behind… T__T

Ahhh, I love those clouds...@.@ (hearts) So naturalistic. I have such a hard timewith clouds, because indicating them with line makes NO SENSE.

Ah, the poppy fields! The golden poppy is my state flower, and I've always liked them: Growing all over the place, being jaunty and orange. In fact, this kinda reminds me of the Central Valley...if the golden hills of the valley were covered in poppies and not farmland.

The clouds look naturalistic, I'm glad to read that! (I was afraid they looked like random blobs).

I think some really pretty clouds can be drawn, just with lines? (stylized ones at least)

OMG, that's so amazzziiing! I really want to see this central valley some day *daydreams*... Just ran a google image search on 'Central valley poppy fields' ...

Gosh! @____@!!!!

I used to think driving through the central valley was so boring too. But then on the last trip down I was like hey! Its really pretty out here! There snow on this yonder mountains! And the hills are gold! And the clouds! WOW. This is when I learned you cannot take pictures while driving. x.x Its no good, my friend. No good at all.

Environment could be cool. We can maybe try something with characters later.

For example, you could try a river flowing through a hot savanna. Or a Chilean kind of rocky seashore.

One week time!
