Description a rice field less than 10 minutes walk from my university. Farms in Korea are for the most part fairly small - not like the giant, monstrous ones you get back in Australia. I tried for a deep depth of field with this one, in order to get as much detail as possible.

The red stamp thingie is actually a wooden stamp I had made up over here - it's my first and last name in Korean. This really old guy carved it out of some wood, and I keep it in a little pouch. I actually needed this to sign a document when I bought a car recently. Koreans don't sign documents with a pen - they all have their own stamp made up. I thought it might be good to use it to sign my devART submission from now on...

Oh I am sure many places do. But loads of regular people still use stamps to sign documents when they go to the bank etc, and I needed one when I bought a car and had to transfer it into my name. It's a quirk I hope never goes away, because as a foreigner here it seems really interesting.

Heya - thanks for the kind comment. I took that towards the rural area of Daegu (or 'Taegu' in the old spelling). 10 minutes walk from the Geongsan campus of Daegu University.

Unfortunately you won't see the rice that like right now, as I took that picture back on October7th. Now we're in early December, and all the rice has been harvested. You might see some interesting piles of husks, but it depends where you go. There are several different ways of piling it up, and each farmer seems to do it a different way from his neighbor.

I'm sure you'll have a pretty cool time here, even though there's not much color around atm, and it's getting pretty chilly! Have a look through my gallery if you wanna check out some more Korean photos - 95% of them are from around South Korea. Oh, and if you're down in Daegu, gimme a shout and I'll buy you a beer - or a soju if you wanna hit the local poison.

Amazing shot... you've got a beautiful gallery mate! love the colours... I'm interested to see this shot as a panaramic though... I think the sense of space will be even more majestic

Hey, thanks a lot for the comment and useful idea. I may have a shot taken in a panoramic view, I'll have to see if I can dig one up. Nowadays, all that rice is harvested and gone. Looks pretty bleak and cold out there!

thanks very much - that's what I was going for - simplicity of color and general landscape. Only when you look closer do you see the complexities in the rice. Thanks very much for commenting!

It's beautiful, kind of ironic with the big building in the background when the field is so green and natural.

I agree, and so I kept it in view as a kind of seperate focal point. Glad you spotted that sense like I did. Thanks for the comment!

Well,I'm not a big fan of photography, but I like this one.
I like how you captured the color of the sky that contrast nicely
with the cornfields.^^
Umm...yeah I'm really a sucker of pictures that show cornfields.

mesondecay In reply to call-me-green-tea [2006-11-07 11:29:51 +0000 UTC]

thanks very much! I'm glad you like the contrast; I think it's one of the more important things in this photo.

The only thing is, it's a rice-field - not a corn-field...

Thanks again!

great shot of a field, the only part i dont like is that you can see the building...but maybe thats just me

mesondecay In reply to weirdklown [2006-11-07 04:28:44 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your comment! I can see your point about the building - I purposely centered it in this shot as a long distance focal point, so the viewers eyes (hopefully!) go from the foreground and fall back to the building in the distance. But I can see how some people might be put off by the man-made architecture in an otherwise fully organic environment. Thanks for the contructive ctiricism.

Some serious contrast there great colours buddy and a nice scene.

mesondecay In reply to MarcAaron [2006-11-07 03:57:56 +0000 UTC]

cheers, thanks for your comment! I pushed the contrast a little to darken the shadows in the rice. This seemed to also add a little 'oomph' to the piece in general. It is quite a nice scene - a lot different from the countryside back in Australia (where I come from).

Oh this is very good... any PS work on it besides the frame?

I love the stamp and the green things at the bottom of your frame, a great way to enhance everything

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mesondecay In reply to Climbout [2006-10-16 02:42:11 +0000 UTC]

thanks Adam, glad you like it. I did a wee bit of PS work on it - I pushed the contrast a tiny bit to darken the shadows in the forground rice a little more. Apart from that, it's ther same as the original photo from the camera. It was a fantastic day, and just the right time to get some nice light across the top of the rice (instead of directly down through it).

Yeah, I was happy with the stamp and the korean writing as well this time (the Korean is pronounced "sal" [soft 'a' sound], meaning uncooked [raw] rice).

my dad plows the rice fields here in southern Louisiana
(he also does soy bean and crawfish too, when in season)

what do the fields look like over there? I'd never seen rice fields till I came to Korea. Crawfish are what I think we Australians call either marron or yabbies. That's if they are freshwater ones.
