Thank you ^^
I like nautiluses mainly because they're living fossils, just like sharks and trilobytes. Also, they seem like enjoyable (but expensive) pets to keep - some species are not even that big and can fit into a big saltwater tank :3

Amazing!
I also like the way you've painted the molluscs... They looks like real *w*

XDD I had to google for the photos of nautiluses, because I never drew them before.
Oh and they're not really molluscs. They're close relatives of squids, octopuses and cuttlefish :3

Okay, okay. I have to say this, and I apologize for it beforehand. But…this scene reminded me first of the exoticism of Avatar, and then I started to have “Tonari no Totoro” flashbacks. I think it’s just the concept of the bus stop, or the fantastical rides that seem the norm. But really, this piece reminds me of walking in the very early morning when it’s still dark, where there’s sometimes a thick, warm haze that obscures everything in view, muffling the world. This drawing gives the same kind of effect. The softened background you created, which has a very gentle, homey feel to it, is very fairy-tale like. It makes the forest a false reflection of reality, like as if the forest was a symbol of the mind…a place for our private selves to retreat into..
First I’ll talk about your setting. I can’t really call it a forest! It’s very aquatic and alien-like. I feel like I want to dive into this world, but frustratingly I can’t seem to glimpse beyond the edges of the page…!!! The subtle, controlled way you utilized the pencil to make the background gives me the impression of a very fragile setting. The road especially seems almost membranous or translucent, or inconsistent like it could fade any time. That’s certainly an interesting concept for a road..but I feel like the nautiluses have been guiding people down that road for centuries. It’s only natural that they’d know the way even without that road.
Seems like there’s a soft glow emanating naturally from the forest. Maybe it’s just because of the almost uniform tones, but this piece is very dream-like an ethereal. I just can’t believe how carefully you gave form to even just the trunks of the trees. In very calculated gestures you seemed to be able to carve those trunks just from the light that surrounds them, that’s how delicate they appear to be. They’re really beautiful to look at, to see the gentle pencil marks and the gradual changes in tone. Your hand’s so steady! I think that the pencils have dedicated themselves to you..since you can control them so
well.
You know I have to talk about the nautiluses!! First off, this is an insane idea. What you did was give hints of an aquatic setting without making it completely so. It allows the viewer to have a wider range of reactions when looking at the picture, because the setting is almost illusory and ambiguous. It’s a great skill as an artist to be able to just give your viewers hints of ideas and feelings in a picture, that even in their subtlety add great visual and emotional depth to a picture. The nautiluses themselves are drawn so precisely. I mean…the lines are so assured and clear, like it couldn’t have been a human who drew this image. They’re really friendly looking, too…they almost seem to be beyond human intelligence, having wisdom..I don’t know why I think this, but they’re definitely intelligent looking. This aspect greatly improves the premise of the drawing, the fact that you were able to give character to the nautiluses. It’s also interesting how the sharpest part of the picture is Fukuoka, like she’s stepped out of the reality of school and books into the serenity of life beyond her academics, but at the same time she remains unable to be completely assimilated into that benign setting. Actually, now that I think about it, it was the perfect choice to make her sharp and stand out. I think it pulls in the softness of the rest of the image and gives the viewer some “truth” and “solidity” to hold onto, making the rest of the image more real, allowing it to have a greater calming effect.
Jeez..I feel so inadequate. I don’t have the vocabulary to talk about this picture.
I mean…the lighting…this soft luminescence, and how you gradually had the forest darken at the upper right corner; it gives off a quiet feel, almost timeless. And I know this will sound strange, but I don’t know how to put it..I’ve never before this piece thought of how light was arranged in images. Maybe there wasn’t much reason to before? In this image all the varying degrees of light, to complete darkness, are balanced perfectly in regards to each other. The composition of the light, how you arranged all the different brightnesses with each other, is extraordinary. I remember a while back that I bothered you about the composition of some of your pieces, but to think that you’ve arranged light in this way so that it almost becomes the centerpiece of this artwork’s aesthetic prowess is remarkable. I don’t know how you can do that…but I feel like you did everything that was necessary. It’s a weird thing to say about a picture, right? But that’s just the feel that I get from it. You hit everything light-wise on the mark, and did things I didn’t think about before. I’m…o____o I’m so angry at myself..I don’t have the words to describe something like this. It almost has the tonal austerity an ink painting would have..wait..that doesn’t make sense..does it…sorry..T__T It’s just..there’s a definite boldness with the shading, where you “take it all the way” in just the right amounts and severity, and then there’s an equivalent lightness in the picture that has a similar darkness in the opposite direction. It’s incredible. It’s…I wish I had the opportunity to see things like this every day. I’m telling you, please draw more.
In all…I’m really impressed with this image. I think you took a really bold approach to shading which allowed you to take your artistic expression where it hadn’t gone before. The shading lent a lot of visual depth to the picture, even though you had a simple layout. The composition is engaging and interesting (how you arranged the nautiluses, “trees,” lights, and the bus stop sign). I really love looking at this piece. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Sorry if I didn’t make any sense!
