Description I can feel a disturbance in the Force... as though millions of fangirls had suddenly cried out in horror.

... I just couldn't resist

Because really, even apes, our closest evolutionary relatives, are physiologically incapable of producing human sounds. So imagine someone who doesn't even strictly speaking have a mouth... there is no possible way Garrus is really going to sound as suave as he does. Sorry, everyone.

(If I thought that last quip about Tali was going to get me torn to pieces... this definitely will )

In other news, drawing Turians is a real pain, though I guess I have myself to blame. I could just find myself some easier to draw crew member to poke fun at.

Just imagine that one of your best friends speaks a completely weird language that creeps you out, out of nothing.

As a soon-to-be-a-linguist I must say that they can pronounce human-like sounds and there was said in Codex that some kids even learn alien languages at school...
But I can hardly imagine human/asari/batarian/quarian/salarian kid studying the turian language XD Due to our differences in anatomy
I guess the sound of voice and timbre are the same but the vowels and consonants... Perhaps they do sound like rattling, growling, crisping and screeching indeed
But I like it even more <3

Phonetics was kind of the idea behind it, actually. (linguistics... ah yes ^^) Though Turians could probably produce approximations of most human sounds with a lot of practice (provided they have a larynx) it definitely wouldn't come naturally to them.
In a community with so many different sound-producing organs, the only viable way to communicate is if everyone learns everyone else's language and talks in their own, which probably explains the kids learning alien languages at school - they can only really learn to understand them, not speak them.
Of course, most sci-fi makes do with miracle translators instead, which seem to instantly convert everything said not only into your language but into terms you can understand. Never mind that translation really doesn't work that way.

Well, though I can imagine Asari, humans, quarians, batarians and drells being able to learn languages of each other... Turians, hanar, elcors and volus are too different
Turians have sharp teeth, long jaw and those mandibles that undoubtedly play an important role in the creation of vowels and constants. Of course, they can produce constants and vowels but it'd be hard to them and us to imitate each other phonemes
But, well, if you have read the comic about First Contact War and The Illusive Man's past then you know that thank to the Reaper's device he can understand and even speak other races' languages. He spoke to Asari and spied... kinda... on Saren...
Well, anyway, I'd love to hear their speech. Other races' languages... as a linguist-to-be I just HAVE to do it! Do ya hear me, Bioware? Let us hear them !

You think they'd invent a whole new language when they can't even be bothered to introduce female aliens?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bjarru In reply to Mevanna [2012-05-06 07:59:30 +0000 UTC]

Well. Turian, salarian and krogans females were introduces. Some in comic, some in game...
No need to invent XD Just let us hear them

Mevanna In reply to Bjarru [2012-05-06 08:03:39 +0000 UTC]

I was always surprised nobody thought of taking an Elcor, Volus or Hanar and simply giving them a female voice without changing the model, like they did with the Salarians and Krogan. Possibly even a Turian, though that would be kind of odd. It would have stopped complaints about the lack of females without creating additional work.

Bjarru In reply to Mevanna [2012-05-06 08:11:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, fans would complain that they used the same models XD
I would complain. Turian female design is a bit odd and anti-lore but still cool
And female Volus. I'd LOVE to see it Pink and Girly XD

even without lips are cheek suction that we know of, remember they're aliens and we don't actually have a codex on thorough turian biology. now that's something the fan-girls would probably love to get their hands on.
