Description This is the second time I visited Petra by night this year, although this time around, I had my new camera and wide angle lens!

This shot was taken from a wide section of the canyon that you follow down to see the main treasury, it was a cool beautiful night with a full and bright moon out...very magical

I love the desert! apparently wadi rum- which is our sandiest desert was once a lush forest with all kins of wildlife, you can still see maps and carvings on the mountain wall left behind by the Nabatean caravans and hunters there is also the ruins of a temple, but i haven't gotten around to seeing it!

no idea, foresting possibly *another subject to look up*, northern Jordan was covered in forests 150 years ago, then the Ottomans cut em all down to build their railroads!!

Nice work man, you nailed the exposure perfectly. It could be a little sharper though, I'd have dropped the apature a bit and upped the exposure time. Unless you did this handheld, in which case nice job

yeah i only learned my lesson afterwards, some of the guys suggested lowering the iso to 100 and extending the shutter time to about 30 - 40 seconds (like your suggestion), still Im proud of it non the less, i was under pressure to keep on moving and had no time to do such a thing. BUT i might be going back at the end of the month (for my birthday). so fingers crossed ill do a better job next time

I don't know how far you live from Petra... But i'd go back to take this kind of pic, but with ISO 100... Then you'll have less grain. Can you do it for me?

I agree with you it is very grainy! I was kind of worried about uploading it, I might be going back in a few weeks so ill be able to re-shoot them without a rush (I had friends with me this time).

also i think the is allot of grain this time because i reduced the size and brightened it up.

Thanks and i will go back!!

Well, the 400D is not the camera you'll have good pictures with high ISO numbers. I don't know if you put it deliberately at 800, but always try to shoot at 100. Never put the ISO in automatic either (a mistake i did in the beginning). As you used a 4 second shutter speed i suppose you had a tripod with you, so with an ISO 100 it might've been 10 seconds, but with less grain and better details... And use a F of 9 to 22 next time, the shutter speed will be even slower, but you'll have a lot detailed... And finally, a trick is to put the focus in manual and have it at the infinity, then your picture will be sharp from 1.5 meters to infinity...

With that you'll have a very long exposure, so it's better to take the shot 20 minutes after sunset, then the sky is a bit more lit and you'll have a combination of natural ligh (normally a dark blue sky) and the artificial lights...

Thank you very much for the tips!!! I plan to do a night shoot tonight so I'm going to try out what you said!

I did put the ISO on high intentionally because it appeared correct from the display (I didn't realize until i got home) :/ but no problem, at least i learned to correct the problem from you , another deviant also suggested that i use shutter lock on the main camera to completely eliminate shake! but said when you try to eliminate grain you start to get hot pixels
