Description I very, very rarely shoot other people. Maybe half a dozen people have a photo of themselves that I took that wasn't just a quick snapshot at a show or a club somewhere. When someone's in front of me, staring at me and waiting for me to instruct them on how to stand, I freeze up. No clue what to suggest. So when Nick asked if I wanted to get some pics of him working on a new piece, I was admittedly nervous, but I figured it'd be a good learning experience. Especially because he has one of those gorgeous expensive cameras that's way, way more horse than I'm used to having under me and I was itching to play with it.

It was nearly 3am and it's likely that we were less than sober. He's bleeding in at least three places and at this point I'm just praying that I don't drop this camera because it's probably worth more than my car. He didn't really deviate from his painting ritual, didn't so much as make eye contact to break it, and I orbited him taking a shot whenever I saw something that interested me enough to try to catch it. I've never really played with a camera that had so much manual everything and I was horrible with exposure and ISO and focus and whathaveyou but I like how this one turned out. It was easily the best of the lot and I explained a little about why when he posted it on his Facebook:

"I think it's the absolute concentration, he's completely absorbed and focused in what he's doing. Unguarded. Nothing in the world exists except the circuit of eye, hand, brush, blood, and paper. Captured moment of creation, more intimate than sex and just as sacred."

Nothing else I can say. Eh-eh.

I love how you said creating is more intimate than sex. It really is. To capture an artist working on their art in a photograph requires absolute trust between said photographer and the artist.

This is a great shot. Nice capture of the concentration going on.
You should still try to photograph others. Go mad. You can do it.

I am ever so glad that Nick let you use his camera. Very lovely shot. I like shots in which the subject poses but even more so I love the ones in which the subject is doing whatever her or she was doing before they had a camera on them. Nick's work is beyond amazing.

He has tattoos on the outer edge of his hands just under his pinky and he's had some problems healing them clearly because of how mobile and exposed to damage the hands are. He just had the left one touched up, so he's wearing a brace to try to minimize his use of that hand until it heals. Clever thing.

This is absolutely fantastic.
I really love this shot though.
I've seen someone who painted a heart in blood from it once, which worked out really well, however this piece captures the whole moment in time.
A really effective piece. ♥

I use blood from time to time in my stuff and I've fallen into the habit of using actual blood rather than the tube kind. Partly because I always think fake blood looks fake and partly because my photos are a form of ritual, so the blood is necessary.

I've always thought that blood out of a tube looks fake as well.
Or those blood tablets that you can get as well.
Did you by any chance take a photo of the finished painting that Nick did?
I'm very curious as to see the whole finished piece ^.^
However, I think that the photos from this shot are excellent!

Please keep the work coming, and especially the literature writing, as you're so good at it!

Every time I tap a vein I notice how opaque blood is. I think that's what the problem is with fake shit. It always looks like red syrup, clear and watery. Blood has an opacity, a weight to it. "Blood is thicker than water", ffs.

I didn't photograph the finished piece, as it wasn't finished until the day after and I know he likes to post finished pieces himself in his own way, I was setting out strictly to photograph the progress of an unfinished piece. Someone more skilled than I am will capture the final product in all its gory glory.

Got all emo and creative and what the fuck ever tonight, posted some new shit along with some spur of the moment writing that just sort of happened while I was typing in the Artist Comments box. Hope you like.

VampyDesire In reply to MisterManzin [2009-11-22 19:01:59 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree.
Some of the fake blood in the movies I know is quite good.
I think for some of them they use something like pigs blood, however I don't think I'm the sort of person that would want to run around the room with pigs blood all over me.

Ah, don't worry about it.
I'll check up on his deviant art in a few weeks and see if he's posted the finished piece.

Ooo awesome, yet I saw your new pieces, and they're really awesome ^.^
You're really good at all this you know.
I didn't think you'd want me commenting all your work though ^.^

I would say there's no need for you to be so hard on yourself. I know you do modeling, but just because you're not used to taking photos of other people doesn't mean you have to second guess yourself. If anything, I encourage you to do it more often. It's fun and it's a great outlet in itself. And I see potential in you.

I second guess everything I do and I don't know if I'm ever completely happy with any of it.

It is fun and a great outlet, though. I shot myself again last night using yet another person's new camera and I'm largely happy how they came out though the editing is giving me a bit of a headache. Once they're adjusted, though, they'll be posted here. Always a case of feast or famine.

Awesome, I do a lot of self portraits too...
it is easier to use yourself as a model
because you always know what outcome you want.
I look forward to seeing some
