"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am Doctor Ichiro Serizawa, Chief Paleobiologist and Director of Subject Bioacoustic Studies at the Nautilus Foundation, and I am here to introduce the various Subjects or "Kaiju" named by the general public, today starting with inexcusably the most infamous Subject known to the Foundation as well as the rest of humanity. This meeting is exclusively for Level 4 personnel and above, so if you have found your way here without proper credentials, please leave now or know that you will be found and proper disciplinary actions will be administered. With that, let us begin.

Anomaly #: Subject-1954

Subject Danger Class: Keter

Threat Containment Procedures: As demonstrated by the 1954 tragedy and subsequent incursions, Subject-1954 poses a significant threat to global stability, though with it being contained at Site-54, activity from other anomalous organisms has decreased exponentially. In the worst-case scenario that Subject-1954 were to awaken and begin actively attacking once more, there exists a number of elaborate anti-anomalous protocols designed to contain the threat (see Protocol File 16, Section C). Built into Site-54, Maser Turrets will simultaneously open fire on the support structures connecting the facility to the ice above Godzilla, collapsing the site in order to successfully contain the Subject again. If that doesn’t work, a multifaceted and highly destructive plan is to be deployed against any threat, usually Godzilla, deemed too powerful to stop using normal means. Protocol File 16 involves an extremely powerful, spaced-based maser weapon (refer to patent JP9836582B1); in brief, a nuclear weapon would be detonated in the atmosphere, a series of mirrors and magnets would collect and concentrate the energy, and an extremely devastating laser would be fired at Godzilla. However, that procedure is only accessed by Foundation personnel Level 5 and above, and thankfully, Subject-1954 has maintained dormancy for the foreseeable future.

History: Today, we will be discussing Subject-1954 or "Gojira," translated by ECHO, our on-site AI, as Godzilla. Subject-1954 is the first anomalous hyperfauna, while not the first to be classified, to purposely destroy a large human settlement, and while I will not disclose the events before Godzilla's attack that heralded the Subject's wrath upon humanity, I will explain some details that will better tie the events into a more cohesive timeline. In February 1947, upon having one of their naval forces go missing and presumably destroyed, the United States Navy contacted the Japanese Prime Minister, believing that a massive aquatic organism was to blame, to which allied forces contacted the Nautilus Foundation to open an investigation to try to locate this strange, unidentified creature; however, after several weeks of searching across the islands surrounding the Japanese archipelago, aside from odd radioactive signatures coming from the Izu-Ogasawara Trench, they couldn't find the anomalous organism, and as such, called off the search.

That was until March 1, 1954, seven years later, when the Daigo Fukuryū Maru (第五福龍丸, F/V Lucky Dragon 5), a Japanese tuna fishing boat with a crew of 23 men, made headlines when it was contaminated by nuclear fallout from Castle Bravo, the first in a series of high-yield thermonuclear weapon design tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, as part of Operation Castle. The crew suffered acute radiation syndrome (ARS) for a number of weeks after the Bravo test, though despite being inadvertently infected with hepatitis through blood transfusions, all of them recovered except for Aikichi Kuboyama, the boat's chief radioman, who died on September 23 from liver damage. In addition, the USS Patapsco (AOG-1), which lacked a decontamination washdown system and had therefore been ordered on 27 February to return to Pearl Harbor as quickly as possible, was still within about 180 to 195 nautical miles east of Bikini Atoll, and also experienced lesser degrees of contamination upon further examination. In fact, the fallout was more widely spread than expected, with traces of radioactive material recorded as far as Australia, India, Japan, and even the United States and parts of Europe. Castle Bravo quickly became an international incident, prompting calls for a ban on the atmospheric testing of thermonuclear devices, especially in Japan, which had been affected by the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima less than a decade prior.

What nobody could have anticipated, however, was that the crew of the Lucky Dragon 5 were not the only living beings affected by the Bravo test that day...

October 27, 1954. Nine years after Subject-1954's first but classified appearance in Operation [DATA EXPUNGED]. The first vessel, the Japanese freighter Eiko-maru, was lost near Odo Island, with only scant rumors of a mysterious shape in the nearby water to go on during the subsequent investigation. The Bingo-maru was sent by the Nautilus Foundation to inspect the site where the freighter was lost, only to also go missing, but this time with survivors to recall the nature of the incident. Over the next few days, multiple occurrences of watercraft going missing would be recorded, all in similar manner to the US Naval fleet that had vanished in 1947, ascribed by the residents of Odo Island to a mysterious water creature called the Hōnengyo, historically said to be an omen of fortune - supposedly, the nuclear tests that had occurred earlier in the year had awoken it from its suspended hibernation, scarring it greatly, and invoking its primordial wrath, a portent of death and godly destruction. While these stories were summarily dismissed as recollections of past mythology, the Nautilus Foundation wouldn't take any chances, and sent a research expedition to Odo Island, setting a research outpost to see if the legends had any merit - until it appeared. Investigation near the shore discovered unusually high background radiation levels, and the bodies of numerous unidentifiable arthropods (see SUBJECT FILE-1954 HISTORICAL FILE #5.2 - SHOCKIRUS EMERGENCE PHENOMENON [OPEN]) not recognizable by any of the island’s residents and speculated to be of prehistoric origin. As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the many seabirds that usually swarmed near the coast had all vanished, having left the island in large flocks in the hours prior. Reporters had descended upon Odo Island to dig up any potential material for a news scoop they could, and indeed there was a significant amount of evidence pointing towards a being beyond anything known to science as the culprit for the vanished ships, but no sightings had been made. That changed a few nights after the sinking of the Bingo-Maru, when a storm hit the island and stranded most of the people there. During the night, a mysterious beast, saurian in form but towering high above everything else present, emerged from the sea, and by the time it departed before the sun rose the next day, 17 homes, thirty people, and 20 of the villagers' livestock were lost. Amidst the tumult of Odo's residents demanding relief efforts, the Nautilus Foundation was contacted and paleontologist Hidetaka Yamane would be sent to the island to analyze the sightings and rumors. What he would uncover was nothing short of astonishing. The Raijin was indeed a living, breathing creature - something that was seen by the Foundation once before but hasn’t been since the recent bombings of [DATA EXPUNGED]. Godzilla had returned.

"We're going to join Daddy! We'll be where Daddy is soon!"
- A nameless mother who was one of the casualties of Gojira's attack on Tokyo

Realizing they were now dealing with an unprecedented event, the newly-formed JSDF and the Nautilus Foundation began the largest military mobilization Japan had seen since WWII, its naval division setting up a barricade of battleships along the entire eastern coast, and a fleet of cruisers continuously circled the creature from above, dropping depth charges as the organism continued to make its way northward. At the same time, an electrical barrier dubbed バリアナイン (Barrier Nine) was constructed, designed to emit approximately twenty million volts to deter what the national and international media had dubbed Gojira, after a god of might and destruction from the mythology of Odo Island, near Bikini Atoll.

November 3, 1954. Provoked by consistent efforts to destroy it, Subject-1954 had now set its sights on where these efforts had come from in the first place. None of the efforts to stop its rampage were successful, and the beast surfaced off the coast of Ginza retaliating by beginning a campaign of wanton destruction, rendering Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures uninhabitable. Twice the monster made landfall, and twice it utterly obliterated all that was built to put a stop to it, plunging into the heart of the city and leaving a trail of destruction, radioactive fallout, and burning rubble in its wake. All the while, its terrible screeching roars could be heard for miles around, announcing its agony and hatred for all to hear. Barrier Nine would be put to the test as Godzilla emerged, and rather than being killed or even injured, the electrical impulses only provided a burst of energy to the creature, causing it to surge forward with renewed vigor. The monster then unleashed a blast of gamma and Cherenkov radiation from his mouth upon the large plates on Subject-1954's dorsum glowing, now known as the anomaly's Atomic Particle Breath. Eyewitness accounts compared the blast to nuclear combustion, concentrated into a single, concentrated beam; in any case, an estimated 13,001,819 civilians were killed during the next three hours, eclipsing the recent bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Japan would never know peace on this fated night, and by the time the sun rose again in the East, it was clear that despite the insistence on Yamane's part that the creature should be studied and not destroyed, the danger it posed to the world at large was too great, and the motion was reluctantly made to put an end to its furious rampage once and for all. A continuous all-out assault by land, air, and sea JSDF divisions on the monster failed to damage the entity, which returned each day to Tokyo Bay and returned each night, again and again, to further reduce Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures to irradiated ruin. The anomaly resumed its assault on several more coastal prefectures (~25,000 additional fatalities). As day turned to night, half of Tokyo had been reduced to rubble, and a significant portion of the survivors had been exposed to lethal doses of gamma rays. Powerless to stop Subject-1954, the Nautilus Foundation as well as the heartbroken survivors of his attacks could do nothing but watch in fear as Subject-1954. After the most recent attack, Anomalous Fallout Specialist Koji Serizawa, who had been secretly researching an extremely powerful substance known as micro-oxygen, decided to take matters into his own hands in a last-ditch effort to repel Godzilla, creating a devastatingly powerful biological weapon known as the [DATA EXPUNGED]. Luring the monster into the ocean using devices emitting gamma signals similar to nuclear explosions, triggering an aggressive territorial response, Dr. Serizawa stole a diving suit from the newly established JSDF and descended into the depths of the bay where Subject-1954 was hypothesized to reside. Due to the intense, lethal radioactivity the anomalous organism produces, it's theorized that Koji slowly, but painfully dealt with the effects of the radioactive isotopes, bringing the device to Godzilla, and allowing himself to be consumed by the resulting blast of the weapon. The [DATA EXPUNGED]'s blast was well over 20 kilotons and managed to leave Tokyo Bay completely inhospitable for organic life for 40 years, and is still dealing with some long-lasting effects 100 years later. The nightmare had come to an end, but the crisis was still far from over. For the first time in recorded history, mankind had come to blows with a Subject that could match them, and overwhelm them, in battle. While many hoped that this would be a one-off incident, a one-in-a-million freak of nature, it would soon become clear that this was merely the tip of the iceberg. Knowledge of a new plane of biological existence had opened up to humanity, and this was not a window but a doorway.

Since that infamous attack, several incursions involving Subject-1954 have transpired across the globe until March 15, 1975, when the anomaly suddenly vanishes from human sight, leaving humanity a relatively peaceful nine years until December 15, 1984, when the abrupt return of Godzilla to the Japanese Coast coincides with the disappearance of a nuclear submarine, escalating an international schism with Soviet Russia and the United States. Godzilla razed through Tokyo's business district, leveling the area before systematically destroying several nuclear power plants over a three-day period, resulting in 3.2 million deaths, most due to radiation-related complications. The Nautilus Foundation, which had now risen to be one of the most powerful organizations in recorded human history proposed the idea of luring Godzilla to Mount Mihara using high-pitched frequencies on Oshima Island and trapping him with a controlled eruption; the Americans' suggestion of a nuclear warhead was immediately vetoed, and the Foundation's plan was instead implemented. The mission was thought to be a success since Godzilla hadn't been seen, but August 14, 1991, would prove otherwise when Subject-1954 used an ability called the Nuclear Pulse to purposely cause the volcano to erupt, subsequently setting him free upon the world once more, later resulting in the radiological contamination of Oshima Island. The following decades would see various reappearances of Godzilla across the planet, regularly attacking coastal cities across Japan, leaving much of the country left in perpetual tragedy to the point of the country heading for an economic disaster. The most notable and destructive is "G-DAY," an event where Subject-1954 surfaced in Kamata, Japan, and traveled straight to Tokyo, resulting in 17.3 million deaths, including the prime minister and cabinet ministers.

In February of 2031, the Nautilus Foundation, in cooperation with the remains of the world's militaries initiated Operation:[DATA EXPUNGED] (see Protocol File 13, Section A), where the last group of the world's militaries lured Godzilla to an ice shelf in Antarctica where my father, Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, sacrificed his life to open a fissure in the ice, trapping the anomaly in a 500-meter-deep and 1,000-meter-long hole, sealing the Subject in thick, artificially-generated ice for the foreseeable future, where the research outpost has now been designated as Foundation Containment Site 54. With the help from lead Foundation Subject Mythographer Miki Saegusa and the many other personnel over the decades, we’ve come to learn that Subject-1954 is, presumably (see SUBJECT FILE #G_1998 ), the last of an ancient race of prehistoric lifeforms of his ecosystem and prevented the other anomalous hyperfauna from overpopulating and causing mass destruction, acting as a force of nature that maintained balance. Painted murals found by the Nautilus Foundation on Odo Island depict Subject-1954 being worshipped by ancient civilizations as the leader or “God” over the other anomalies, a title given to the guardians of Earth known only as the “Great Old Ones” (see Protocol File 18, Section 5). This is widely known as the “Sacred Totem” hierarchy among the Foundation personnel, a chain of command that all anomalous organisms are known to follow, ranked from weaker, smaller anomalies to the larger, more destructive creatures such as Subject-1954, Subject-1961, Subject-1974, Subject-1933, and Subject[DATA-EXPUNGED].

Biology: Godzilla is not a weak Kaiju, with scarred, semi-melded crocodilian-like scales and gnarled keratin able to resist conventional forms of human assault and can easily withstand most attacks from other anomalous organisms, though there are a few weaknesses that the Subject will constantly try to avoid, i.e. its eyes, mouth, and the pair of gills on each side of its neck. If close-range combat is unsuccessful, Godzilla uses its intense atomic emission and radiation-tolerant physiology to withstand amounts of radiation that are dangerous to other anomalous hyperfauna and especially toxic to humans - specific aspects of his anatomy are in fact radiation-absorbing. Special nerves and blood vessels just under his scales are able to draw in thermal energy in a manner convergent to crocodilians, but the ones just under the keratin covering his bladed dorsal spines have cells that are not only radiation resistant but actively draw particle radiation towards them.

Samples of Godzilla’s skin taken after the incursion in 1984 (see SUBJECT-1954 HISTORICAL FILE#5 - 1984 INCURSION) have even resulted in the discovery of an additional kind of tissue that synthesizes organic chemicals with radiation as input, similar to the photosynthetic cells of plants, suggesting that Subject-1954 is at least partly radiotrophic - a possible holdover from when his ancestors adapted to the increased levels of UV radiation which occurred during the Permian extinction. All of this means that Godzilla is able to absorb all forms of radiation emissions as a means of sustenance when organic nutrition is unavailable, allowing it to withstand amounts of radiation that would be dangerous to most other forms of organic life. In theory, he would be capable of cleaning all of Chernobyl of any traces of harmful radiation within a few months if not weeks. Foundation scientists believe Subject-1954 seems to gravitate towards power plants rather than seeking out animal prey simply because at his size, there are precious few organisms that he can adequately subsist on, and most of those are hazardous enough in their own right that populations of them would be unsustainable. When he does hunt, he primarily targets life forms that are also quasi-radioactive in origin, particularly other Subjects. Tying into his radiation absorption ability, Godzilla is capable of emitting it as well, or at least venting excess amounts of it to prevent his already distorted anatomy from mutating further and causing him additional stress.

The muscles surrounding his respiratory system have a network of nerves and vessels that funnel radiation that is emitted by the rest of his physiology into the lungs and trachea, and the alveoli of his lungs themselves are also specially radiation-resistant to aid in this. When Godzilla charges his atomic breath, he draws energy from his bio-nuclear circulatory system which activates when he is threatened. This triggers a neutron flux that manifests as a blue glow which slowly moves from the tip of his tail up his protective dorsal fins, which serve as energy reserves for his atomic power, which results in a toxic cloud of neon blue radiation and bolts of "nuclear lightning" being expelled from his dorsal musculature in a condensed, radioactive lightning storm that can be seen for miles around. Finally, the energy reaches the nucleosynthetic glands in Godzilla's throat chambers where the radiation can be seen throughout his semi-transparent skin while the Kaiju opens his mouth, allowing for a ring of magnetic and gamma radiation to coalesce in front of his mouth.

He is, therefore, able to exhale radiation in the form of a beam of nuclear photons called the Atomic Particle Breath or atomic breath, most often giving the impression of breathing a concentrated nuclear blast; capable of destroying entire cities and killing many other anomalous organisms; range is approximately 1.6 - 8.4 miles (2.5-12.8 km). The same subdermal vessels that absorb radiation can also release it as well, most often via his dorsal plates glowing before he exhales his atomic breath.

Still, he can also release it through the rest of his hide and form a sort of self-detonation, wherein atomic energy is expelled in a miniature nuclear explosion, with the creature unleashing a burst of condensed versions of his oral atomic particle breath from his dorsum referred to as Godzilla’s Nuclear Pulse which can eliminate, burn, sicken, and/or scald even other kaiju in immediate proximity; range is 15.96 miles (25.7 km).

Although Godzilla prefers close combat most of the time due to practicality, his atomic breath can traverse considerable distances if exhaled with enough force, although its concussive power generally decreases the further it travels. Godzilla has shown he can control its power and firing duration, as he was able to obliterate the entire city of Tokyo in seven shots (see SUBJECT-1954 HISTORICAL FILE #7 - 2017 INCURSION), but other times snip out a specific target without leveling the entire area in one shot. He could fire once in a short burst to snip a target or fire it continuously like a laser. The beam was hot enough to glass entire cities.

Behavior: According to records, Godzilla's behavior seems to be that of a territorial animal with some cognitive functions on par with that of an adult human, and is the driving force to restore balance to nature whenever that balance is disrupted, suggesting that he essentially considers the entire Earth to be his territory. It is capable of strategizing and under certain circumstances, may form makeshift alliances with other anomalous organisms in order to execute plans or if they both share a common goal (see SUBJECT FILE #M_1961 ). Godzilla is capable of displaying extreme ruthlessness, as seen when he is attacked by the military or any other Kaiju, and if he does not attack his adversaries at that moment, he will accurately track the aggressors across the globe for as long as possible and strategically attack them until they are completely obliterated.

When it comes to benevolent anomalous hyperfauna (see SUBJECT FILE #M_1961 ) and (see SUBJECT FILE #KC_1974 ), Godzilla recognizes them as his allies and communicates, along with other Kaiju, using an ancient subsonic frequency. Subject-1954 demonstrates inquisitiveness and never demonstrates direct hostility toward humans who display non-threatening actions, allowing manmade vehicles to maintain a close distance to him, and generally avoids humanity without any more conflict as long as they do not cause any imbalance in return.

As the current apex predator of the other Kaiju, Godzilla had been sighted, though rarely, actively steering other anomalous organisms away from large human cities to prevent any further destruction, maintaining a strained yet peaceful connection between humanity and the anomalous until the world needed him once more, be it as its savior or its destroyer.

That’s all the time we have today. If you have requests for other anomalies to cover in these lectures whether of the more mythical variety or more common anomalous organisms, please log them in the comments section below. I’ve been Dr. Ichiro Serizawa, thank you for your time, and good night."
