…The King Vulture is the only surviving member of the Sarcoramphus genus, although fossil members are known.
…Its closest still living relative is the Andean Condor.
…It may derive his name of “King” from his habit of displacing smaller Vultures from a carcass and eating its fill while they wait, while others say the name is derived from the Mayan Legends, in which the bird was a king who served as a messenger between humans and gods.
