Batgirl slowly made her way through the warehouse, every muscle in her body tensed and ready to spring into action at the smallest danger.
The heroine's head swept from side to side, her eyes narrowed and on guard against any traps that the (supposed) inhabitants of the building might have left for unwanted guests. Unconsciously, her gloved hands traveled down to the square pouches on her utility belt, rustling each pouch to make sure that her array of crimefighting tools - Batarangs, Bat-cuffs, lockpicks, etc. - were all in place.
"It's quiet..." Batgirl breathed to herself. "Too quiet..."
She winced a bit at the clichΓ©, but she reminded herself that in this case, it was all too true. The only thing she could hear was the thump-thump of her own heart and the click-clack of her boot heels on the concrete floor. The rest of the warehouse was silent as a grave.
Not only that, but it was also freezing. Several times already, Batgirl had been tempted to huddle against herself; her costume was meant for freedom of movement, not warmth, and she was paying for that dearly right now.
Another minute or two, and the heroine found herself wondering if she wasn't just chasing a false alarm after all. There were no signs that the warehouse was even inhabited, much less being used as a front by some criminal operation. Had it all been just a giant waste of time?
Then her ears picked up an all-too-familiar titter behind her.
"Egad, what have we here? A little Batgirl in my belfry!"

"I've got to be careful." 'The Joker is probably just waiting to knock me out with chloroform or to shoot me in the face with gas.'
