Description This is my remedy for "Not-Wanting-to-Write-Essay-itis." Unfortunately, it does little in the way of actually FINISHING said essay, but hey, procrastination? It's the AMERICAN way!

ANYway, the picture is referenced from a photo shoot in Vogue that focused on the resurgence of Victorian clothing in the modern day fashion industry. And yes, the fashion industry is royally screwed up, but YAY VICTORIAN CLOTHING HUZAAH. An unhealthy amount of my wardrobe consists of stuff like this because I just love it. I think my family thinks I'm touched in the head, but oh, well. Except for my grandmother. She'd bustle it out every day of the week if she could. I really would love to make two Victorian gowns, one for my grandmother and one for me, and we could go to one of those period costume balls. She's always wanted to go to one of those. She would have a BALL. GET IT? GET IT? BECAUSE IT'S A BALL AND--

ANYWAY again, I was inspired by that ethereal sort of beauty Victorian women seemed to possess. The model, whoever she was, was lovely, and I wanted to capture the fleeting feeling the photograph had, almost as if she'd been caught out of her own time and was staring curiously at the camera.

That, or she'd just seen "Jersey Shore" for the first time and realized that the world was catapulting towards spray-tanned, hot-tubbing disaster.

"Egads! The blowouts! The overly hairsprayed, heinous blowouts! Save the children! Gird your loins! Oh, what fury hath Snookie wrought?!"

I absolutely adore the way in which you exaggerate facial structure and still maintain a sense of realism. This (among many others in your gallery) is great!

Wow, thank you! I always worry that realism is lost in my pieces because of that exaggeration, so I'm so glad you can still see it!

Holy crap. I haven't checked your stuff out in ages, and now I very much regret it. This is gorgeous. And makes me wish I was still drawing like a crazy person. :3

This is amazing, I love it so much! Your procrastination drawings decimate my procrastination doodles of last night, which consisted of a fully correct renditioning of the USS Enterprise with correct serial numbers and everything, right where my huge end-of-the-subject-for-the-year essay was supposed to go. Oops.

The saddest thing is that I didn't even have to google what the starship looked like. I'm a huge nerd. I drew it from the newest Star Trek movie, and it was going towards the huge Romulan ship with future-Spock's little ship behind them, and...irrelevant and you probably don't even understand my nerdy psycho-babble anyways.

Erm, in short: I love this!

...The fashion industry today just makes me sad. Makes me want to single-handedly bring the world back to poet shirts, ruffled collars and cuffs, double-breasted waistcoats, frock coats, petticoats, lace-up bodices, etc. Gah.
Luckily for me, people around me get used to the fact, after knowing me long enough, that I have no desire to look like I belong in this century.

But your art is magnificent, as always. Ethereal beauty, indeed.

I know. Granted, I like the artistic aspect of some of the designer clothing, but for the most part, it's just too much. I don't think I could ever work in that industry. Too much pressure, and not the good kind of pressure, either.

Amen to that! I'm the same way. Although, unlike our Victorian counterparts, I AM fond of modern orthodontia.

And indoor plumbing. Gotta love indoor plumbing.

Thank you!

EntirelyInsane In reply to Muirin007 [2011-03-18 16:54:35 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Some of it is nicely artsy, but the overarching amount of it is...(I'm going fully prudish here, I guess) immoral. Not very nice.

Ha, yeah. Plumbing is a lifesaver. As is portable music, and readily available information. I like internet, but I don't like so many people's dependency on it...

And the world, mainly your watchers, thank you for your amazing procrastination skills and the fact that you have contracted 'Not-Wanting-to-Write-Essay-itis.

You never cease to amaze me with your talent. Also your humor is quite good.

Egads anything but that! Honestly fashion has really become quite crazy, chaotic, and hectic in the more modern years. I still love the fashions of the Victorian Era, there is just something about them that really speaks out saying 'THIS, this is REAL fashion people. Not over bedazzled, sparkling, feathered, moody, colorful, flashy nightmares.' But alas I am sterotyping. Nasty habit, should probably stop. What is fashion today is old news tomorrow, or so it seems. Again with the sterotyping.

I really like how you have captured that silent curiosity look she has. Her eyes really catch the viewer, so deep and full of nobility. She expresses interest, yet in a dignified manner. Bravo.

Aw, thank you so much! I appreciate that.

I know. Now, there are some things I like about modern fashion (mostly Audrey Hepburn-esque minimalism), but it's just such a contradictory, brutal industry. Devil Wears Prada much?

Oscar Wilde said something like "Fashion is a form of art so ugly that we have to alter it every four months."

All I know is, people should stick to whatever works for them. In my case, it's stuff a century out of date!

I do agree, some fashion is reasonable, but it is when you go into the bizarre, or over bedazzled it starts getting to weird for me.

Do not forget unreasonably over price it *laugh*.

In my case I am probably 1-2 centuries out of date and loving it. Though some of my wardrobe is more modern.

Nice job on the hair, especially, and I really like the oval framing that looks almost glasslike. She looks like she is looking through one of those domed mirrors they had back then.

I have always been a big fan of Victorian fashion, although I tend to lean a little more toward the more practical Edwardian. That said, I'm having fun developing a wardrobe for my latest heroine, circa 1883. I still have a few pieces from the last Victorian resurgence in the 70's; I really got into it at the time. Thinking of repurposing them into Steampunk now.

Thank you so much!

Same here, actually! I LOVE the flowing lines of Edwardian dress, and the blouses with the high collars and billowy sleeves. So pretty!(And the big hair. Big hair is always fun. )

How fun! You definitely should work with them. That would be an interesting project.

Gorgeous~

I kind of love how the fashion industry can't really make up its mind. And clothing trends can't, either. I mean, right now, it's like some kind of crazy mix of "bohemian" and 80's and some stuff that my mom is like "lol I wore that when I was a kid" and then my grandma is like "lol I had one of these when I was a wee tot."

It just means that no matter what I wear, I'm usully in some kind of style somewhere.

Muirin007 In reply to grieverwings [2011-03-16 23:51:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I know, it's ridiculous. Funny, but ridiculous. Lady Gaga, for instance. I mean, okay, kudos to you, Lady Gaga, for being a unique special flower, but I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE DOING TAPING BACON TO YOURSELF.

Maybe if we run around covered in raw meat we'd be famous. People would throw money at us because we would be innovators and we'd fight the man with our meat bras.

Ho ho ho, your grandmother was a wee tot.

That's how I feel. Somewhere in the world, I'm inevitably in style.

Hopefully.

Probably not.
