Description troΓ°a halir helveg
en himinn klofnar

An experiment of combining the two death goddesses, although this is definitely more Hel than Kali. Done, perhaps ironically, for a project on Arthur Szyk and his crazy detailed pictures. There should probably be more severed heads.

I apologize also for the seam... It wouldn't fit on the scanner all at once.

Absolute magic. I knew those two were sisters under the skin...

A lovely image.

I believe Kali is sometimes depicted with different skin hues on each side to show the different aspects of her personality, exactly the same as Hela so a good match.

that's an interesting idea,..... i love it when just the sight of something makes me ask questions,... in this case,... if Kali and Hel were combined,... how well would the aghouri and the seidr get along?(:

I really find the weird combination and juxtaposition of the two Goddesses striking, and the weird amalgam you drew, really isn't too far of a stretched.

In a great overly simplified statement of matters, here's some interesting information: The Norse Gods & Indian Gods aren't as disparate as one might first think. Both cultures which produced these Gods, are part of the vast interconencted and related "Indo-European" family. Sharing a fairly common ancestry. So there is some relation like a common groundwork in the ancient past, even if later development evolved in different directions.

I love this picture, the artwork is amazing, but there is one thing kinda throwing me off. I thought that in Norse Mythology half of hel's body was that of a rotting corpse?

Oh my god...i can't get over how fabulous this is! It's so detailed and perfect, it's really gorgeous. The symmetry in it gives it a slightly celtic feel. Everything about it is so smooth and strong, which really compliments the subject matter well. Because it's so posed, the woman almost has this potential energy, like she's going to leap out at any moment. This is truly amazing work.

Are you sure you need Faber-Castell?

The media you've applied the ink with is superb; beautiful crisp lines enhance the elegant (albeit menacing) form of the goddess. Gorgeously intricate pattern, especially on her dress and the framing border. However, what I really like about this piece is the imaginative concept, not to mention its skilled execution. Beautifully done, though I wouldn't want to meet her anytime soon... Anyway, phenomenal job, and though the rest of your gallery is equally as impressive, I find this one the most striking.

Thank you very much!

This was done with Sakura Micron pens... You know, the expensive ones with the tiny nibs that break off if you even look at them funny.

Now I use mostly pen and ink, which doesn't have tiny lines like this, but is more versatile and less expensive. But they're messy, so I am in the market for a nice pen like you've got.

*g* I was right! I totally see the Kali in her, though it is a lot more Hel than Kali, you Eurocentric midget, you!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

munashiibennu In reply to malika [2006-03-07 05:36:01 +0000 UTC]

That's why it's Hel as Kali and not Kali as Hel. That'd be an interesting image, though; maybe someday...

Not being eurocentric is your job, not mine!

This is insanely cool. I have no idea where to start... I tried scanning the image for a favorite part but was at a total loss because it is all so detailed and excellently done! What is the symbolism of the key hanging from the sword? Also, what was the process of this? Did you sketch it out in pencil before going over it in pen? (I don't understand pens... but this inspires me to figure them out ASAP!) Also, what size is the original? Is it huge or pleasantly petite?

All bambling aside:
This is by far the best thing in your devART, very well done!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

munashiibennu In reply to moonmad [2005-12-19 05:23:52 +0000 UTC]

I drew it in pencil first, then went over those lines with pen, yep! And it's 16x8", with a .25" border around the outside. Whether that is huge or petite depends entirely on the circumstance, I guess...

The key is a symbol of female power in the Viking world. Because the men were so often asea, the women had control of the keys of the house, trunks, barn, etc., most if not all of the time. I think I just threw it in there because Hel is sovreign over her own entire world, Nebelheim, which is the land of the dead, and I wanted to show that somehow.

Thanks so much! I'm glad you like it.
