I have just taken a huge step towards the start of Nagareboshi..... I bring to you a big, colorful fake volume cover!! I apologize for getting color dodge happy. >.<
This took me about 3 days to finish, mainly out of time constraints and lack of ideas for the layout. But I like the overall appearance, even though it's missing some things most real manga covers have (like a little picture of some artwork from the series on the back). Oh well, not all manga volume exteriors are the same.
This cover features the two main characters, Natsuko and Susumu. At first, I was really unhappy about Susumu's skin tone, but I fiddled with it a bit and I finally got the color I wanted. Natsuko, being the first character I created, was very easy to make a color scheme for. I rather like the volume description on the back cover. XD It is pretty accurate, although when it says "world", I mean the whole series. The world they live in is NOT called Nagareboshi.
Again, Nagareboshi has no real meaning to the series.
As for the bar code.... I scanned that from one of my Vampire Knight manga volumes. XD
I kept this cover in English, by suggestion of . After all, this will be read by people that know English. I plan for the manga itself to have any text presented to the characters to be in Japanese (like when they read books or boards). Sound effects will also be in Japanese. Don't worry- sound effects and text will be translated in the artist's notes. (On that note, the kanji in the Nagareboshi logo means "shooting star.")

I wouldn't say it'll be all shoujo. It'll definitely have shounen elements, like fighting and action, as well. After all, if you're going to parody manga, you have to parody more than one part of it!! Not so sure about seinen and josei at the moment, though, since those are aimed at older audiences. I don't want to include anything too graphic in my manga.

I made it using a sketch for reference and plain old Photoshop Elements. I don't really remember how long, but I'd say it took anywhere from 3-5 days to finish it.
(I don't think I've ever had that much time for anything before. XD)

1598x1058 is the final size of this one, although when I worked on the lineart portion, it was twice that size. I blow up the sketch at least twice as big as the size it's scanned in on my computer. Then I do my lineart. I line on a large scale so that when I size it down, the lines become crisp and thin. Coloring and backgrounds are done after resizing.
I'm not sure on DPI, though, although I usually do 300 DPI by default.

from a design standpoint, i think this is actually spot on for a manga/graphic novel cover!
It's bright, vibrant, and catches the viewer's eye. Plus it's not SO bold that it hits "overload" [I haaate when book covers do that.] In fact, the cover gives a lighthearted, comedic feel to the story, which seems to fit perfectly given the synopsis.
And the characters are adorable and I wish to pinch their cheeks. And I am so on board for this type of story, webcomic or real comic. The concept sounds hilarious. [and if it were really on a bookshelf I would so buy it, I kid you not.]

Personally i think yer cover-design has a lot more life to it than most actual book covers. So many seem to go the route of "LOL LETZ USE SUM RANDOM STOCK ART DURHURR" and completely miss the POINT of design... to GET ONE'S ATTENTION. But that is a rant for another time. Your design still kicks butt, and maybe one day it will be the layout for the real deal to sell on shelves. c:
