Description April 19th, 2005

After beginning my research on Personal Daemons, I’ve found that the more time that passes, the more they choose to bother me. They’ve gotten far sneakier about it though, as I’ve had far less sightings. They’re very smart little buggers. Interesting though… The more often that these unfortunate incidents have been occurring around me, the more that I’m beginning to suspect that my interest in them, and ability to recognize them probably riles them up a bit… Either way, as a researcher this all may end up being a good thing in the end… if there are more incidents, then there are probably more Daemons.

Ahah! I think I may be close to catching another one. After my capture of the Shiver, I’ve been revising my methods, and suspect I may have another one on the way. I’ve noticed a Paper Wight around… I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ve heard it. It’s been whispering, trying to encourage me to put off my work on my Psychology paper… it’s very hard not to listen to him… I know he’s there.

I’ve been taking more notes and revising my information on the Paper Wight… after it’s initial sighting by my colleague, I’ve been trying to study them as much as I can… they’re particularly bothersome little things. Particularly this one, who seems to have eaten my field notes. So, I think I’ll rewrite then here for the moment, and later transfer the information onto the computer. Thankfully, the Gremlins seem to have left in favor of our neighbor’s home. Anywho...

About Paper Wights

Though characteristics vary from individual to individual, they are often very small and wyvern-like, with four limbs consisting of two legs and two wings. They are also most often asymmetrical, with more toes here, or a larger wing there. And, they are unique in structure as they appear to be made completely of discarded scraps of notes, homework, papers, and reports. In terms of research purposes, it is also very easy to identify to whom the Personal Daemon belongs to, by the tell-tale doodles and scribbles left in margins.

Paper Wights often whisper into the ears of professors, encouraging them to assign particularly hard or boring assignments, so that students end up either in a constant stressed-out scrabble to complete it, or put it off until the last minute, causing them to panic about whether or not it’ll be finished in time. And, working on both ends, these little guys are also responsible for influencing students to pick particularly masochistic topics for papers, or, they encourage them to procrastinate. Paper Wights even have some traits in common with Snitchers, as they are occasionally found eating homework or assignment instructions. (Though most common in college and high school settings, Paper Wights are also common in office buildings, using their abilities to form similar results in the workplace.) I believe that this is why their body structure consists of scraps of paper in the first place.

Being a Personal Daemon of the Fear variety, these little creatures feed off of the panic and fear exuding off of students as they struggle to finish their assignments. Unfortunately, my own Paper Wight has been getting to me. Try as I might, it’s been very hard to complete my assignments with its whispers floating around. Ah, well… I’ll have it captured soon, and then I’ll hopefully be able to work on figuring out how to photograph the little buggers.

Another Found Object sculpture for class... and the best use my math notes have ever gone to.

Well done. It's cute.
So, now that you've caught it, what are you going to do with it?

Your mentione of 'Personal Daemons' intrigues me. What are you referring to exactly when you say 'personal daemons'? I'm wondering if it's anything similar to what I know to be called 'dæmons'

As a simplified version, my Personal Daemons are these little things I draw that I 'blame' for things that go on in life. They cause icy patches on roads, eat homework, etc.

ah... I generally blame Murphy for stuff like that. Your definition is not at all the definition of 'dæmons' I'm familar with. Roughly put, they are the manifestation of a person's soul/conscience in animal form, and the form a person's dæmon eventually settles in reflects their personality. It's similar to totem animals and animal spirit guides in some Native American cultures. My icon (Oryon) is one of my many attempts to depict my dæmon.
