I think the joke is that he now believes rice-balls are donuts and thus he also believes his parents lied to him about them being...well, rice-balls.

It was all part of 4Kids evil plot to keep gullible children from knowing that other countries exist. Well you aren't getting me you fascist animals.

When I was younger, I thought japanese donuts were made of rice. Thanks 4kids, for confusing me for like 7 years

I know.. When I first started watching Pokémon, ( which was recently) I got mad to say the least. When I showed my older sister ( who grew up watching it) she didn't understand way they called them "jelly donuts" and not rice balls.. I hate 4Kids lol😮😳

I think I was... three or four when this episode aired in America? I remember that I had never heard of onigiri at the time and just assumed that donuts looked like that in Japan xD

When I saw that scene for the first time, I (and many other people) knew that those weren't doughnuts.
4Kids probably thought kids were that freaking stupid to think that riceballs were doughnuts. Kids knew there were other countries.

Same applies to names. Fine, the names are changed because easy-to-remember names are good for marketing but come on. Changing 'Satoshi' for 'Ash'? It's like an insult to human intelligence

To Bad they didn't just call them rice balls to teach kids something, I remember as a kid ash was like " man I'm starving i wish I had a hamburger or some pizza" and all I could think was "what they eat pizza in Japan?"

I watched those cartoons as a teenager and I used to think, "You seem to have spent a lot of time and money to make sure kids don't accidentally learn something about a different culture. Are we really that xenophobic?"

To this day, I feel awful for trying to defend some of the changes 4kids made to my sisters. I blame cultural ignorance of the fact that I was probably ten when we had those arguments, but still I'm not proud of those actions.

Donuts have holes. Those are rice cakes. The dub called them donuts because the execs assumed American kids unfamiliar with Japanese culture wouldn't know what rice cakes even were.

But American kids WOULD know what donuts were, and they'd be able to tell that those are not donuts. How is that better?

Hey, same here! That was a rhetorical question. I fully agree with you; the things these companies have done in the name of "localization" are pretty ridiculous and kind of insulting when you think about them.
