nope nothing that special other than being more accessible than other works and having gained a larger following. Which doesn't make it bad or anything. I found it quite engaging at the time I read it, but the flashbacks and the feeling of stagnation of unresolved issues just made me crazy. 
I "know of" but haven't run into the obsessed fanbase personally, I think it was just alot of people's "first" which makes it special even if it isn't as great as you think it is. There are so many great works out there, why get stuck on just one? (just try and check that whatever you read/watch wasn't dropped halfway through, man it sucks when that happens)

My personal favorite is Berserk, and that's .......... not at all like Naruto.

Having read Naruto myself,I know what you mean by stagnation, and that was one of the reasons I stopped reading it. That, and loud, crazy, honorable ninjas who call out their attacks was too much for me.

Honestly, I saw it coming about 15,000 miles away. But I still had hope I'd be rewarded for slogging through the utter, utter garbage that is Naruto: The Filler Chronicles, and the supreme disappointment that was the Great Ninja War. But nope. I got shat upon. Hard.

And to be honest, I can deal with NaruHina. That's easy enough to fix (because to me it is a large problem. Impulsive Hotheads and EXTREMELY Submissive Doormats are NOT good couples. Not to mention the abusive DISASTER that SasuSaku is going to turn into) in my head and in fanfiction. But my biggest problem is that Naruto didn't sacrifice himself to kill Sasuke. Because leaving Sasuke alive is utterly inexcusable and bat-shit insane. Naruto should've Planetary Rasenshuriken'd that asshole in the face, obliterating them both. Then they could appoint Naruto Hokage post-mortem. It'd be bittersweet, but a perfect ending to such an epic tale. Then they could make a movie where someone revives Naruto via Edo Tensei and he'd be the main villain until he was able to break the mind control and fight the villain in an epic battle as his false body crumbled. It'd be fucking awesome.

Huh... I just made a better ending in like 20 minutes. Bah, whatever. It is what it is. At least I still have One Piece.

Redeem yourself if you are not a consistent and progressive whiny bitch with a strong email persona without the actual terminology of "email" used in the miss placed and still strange strong hatred towardshey brother that he could have just used his brain to understand, but only after making us follow his wrong path one after another and running away from actual help, not to mention the actual main characters (at least we thought they were main characters until their decisions were somehow foiling around sasuke's emo decisions cause "friendship we care poop") circling The opportunity to redeem himself (which by the way, I still felt as though he never did) only for him to squander it over and over again, and then eventually reach of characterization level to speak in a slow and extremely confusingly generic "I've done things. I've seen things. I'm really mysterious. I'm serious." personality. I just lost everything I thought naruto was supposed to teach you. I lost it before, but I am just appalled now with why they thought that was a good ending, or why Sasuke even deserved a child, or why anything happened the way it did. At least naruto is hokage *Sarcastic glass*. I think rainbow ponies coming from the skies and becoming hokage in the ninja village would've made more sense. I could draw really good fanart on that.

Yeah, I'm not going to pretend like Sasuke was the best written character. His character arc was long, overly drawn out, and repetitive. I'd argue that he didn't really undergo any character development between Parts 1 and the very end of Part 2 (and I'm not saying it was executed well, or that it was necessarily deserved, but he did undergo some level of development at the end). Instead, Kishimoto sort of just had him redirect his impassioned hatred and constipation from one focus to the next. Learning about what happened to Itachi wasn't exactly an emotional breakthrough or a loss of innocence in the literary sense. He sort of was just "Oh, okay, I see. I have to murder THESE people now." I don't want to say that Sasuke is a flat character, but he was definitely bland. Kishimoto seemed to prize putting an air of mystery and ominousness around Sasuke, particularly in the last story arcs, as opposed to actually work through his character, and I think that's where it really suffered (in terms of how he brought Sasuke's arc to an end). Instead of walking us through Sasuke's mental and emotional process in an interior, compelling way, we just got monologues and nihilistic philosophizing (something sort of common to a lot of villains past Part 1). I don't really have a problem technically with what changes Sasuke underwent or what conclusions he drew from the experiences he had and the things he learned. The main problem, to me at least, is that it simply wasn't executed well. I'm willing to bet you could make an interesting villain with Sasuke's backstory and character progression, but only (and importantly) with the right dialogue and characterization. I was okay with the ending because I think a) I wasn't really expecting any better at that point, sad as I am to admit it, and b) It still ties in fairly well thematically and I think if you're willing to look past the shoddy character work, pacing, and plot development, you can still find something a little inspiring and profound. But you've really got to be willing to look at it in that light. I'm an uber Naruto fan, so I was willing, but I can see how a lot of people could just be past that threshold of "I cannot any longer give a damn." And I have problems with Sasuke's ending monologue. I felt like it really hurriedly attributed all this complex emotional stuff to his psychological journey that was never really concretely indicated or explored, and both the character and the series may have been better if Kishimoto had simply done that. I have the suspicion that he did it the way he did just because he was banking on some kind of shock value to the ending development of Sasuke finally giving in, but, yeah, it wasn't all that compelling. At least not to me. But, like I said, I'm a huge Naruto fan. I have a real connection to this series and I'm honestly just glad that this series ended, distributing its happy endings to all the characters, before it got even more universally criticized. If this were any other series, I'd probably be far, far harsher on it. But I can't be. Because it's done now. Nothing I say or do will make it better--with the exception of just being happy with what I got. And, admittedly, I sort of am.

Personally, I feel it fell apart at the Great War. At that point things just got stupid. But I myself am making a Naruto character, who will indeed alter the course of the series, steering it back on the proper track. Death of Sasuke (without redemption, too. The jackass lost that chance after coming back to help, then saying fuck you, I want to be Hokage and change the world in my image. HE WANTED TO BE A GODDAMN TYRANT DICK-TATOR. No. You, sir, do not get fucking redemption) and NaruSaku (okay, I'll admit it. That's not exactly the proper path, but dammit it makes more sense to me personally).

Yes, what "redemption", even in the Mongol universe, did he deserve? I have seen so many more monger characters that have done so much more and progressed so much better than him and never got as many chances at him. As a writer and storymaker myself, I was just thoroughly disappointed. Was the author just obsessed with Sasuke, or something? I can only wonder why someone wouldn't try to make this person explain himself a little better than he did. He barely did. He actually got much more than he deserved, and in the end, he still did not even act normal or explain himself right. He is the perfect example of frustrating and horrible lack of closure. The good thing about mongo is that you can create characters, no matter how unrealistic the world and the surrounding is, that we can empathize with. I have never been able to empathize with Sasuke except for in the beginning- barely. But he's a loser. I realized that early. And he will always be a loser. And I am sure he knows he's a loser. And probably Sakura knows he's a loser. Everyone in the whole village, I hope, knows he's a loser.
