Description My first book cover. Huzzah!

Special thanks to Lee Moyer, who helped me through some lighting issues, and reminded me of what I can do.

It's for a young adult novel titled "Red Scorpions". I'll post the cover itself soon.

No no, just something I used to like as a kid. Your book cover made me think of it, is all.

Thank you, cousin! Look, I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you yet - and I'm sorry I missed your phonecall. I've been locking horns with these projects and it's kind of sapped me.

Know that I WILL get back to you with all the promised information as soon as I can.

Oh, nah, it's no problem at all, seriously! Take your time, I don't want to be a bother or end up causin more stress.

You're no stress at all!

OK, here's a bit, and I apologize in advance for my words. First, right now I would work on my rendering skills before I went commissioning. You are almost there, but I would want to buy more finished-looking art if I were shopping. You can take your drawings a lot farther than you've come so far, and must do so.

Your greatest strength right now is photography. Your eye for composition and color is excellent. You can make it work for you right now with photographic sales. In addition, your photographs can be used as reference to build your drawing skills.

I apologize if I have hurt you with my words. I know that criticism can be painful, and I'm not the most diplomatic person on Earth. That said, I see that you have the desire and skill to make your art work for you. To do that in an industry where representational art is king, one must make the best representational work possible. I DO NOT want you to quit, nor do I want to drive you away. I want to help you be the best artist you can be.

Sounds pretty good, thanks!

Cool. I am not out to squash you, and I am always afraid of coming off that way. Let me know if you need any anatomy reference to smooth your way forward.

Yeah, no prob. Dough's gotta take a little heat to expand, ne?
I do think I need more anatomically in the ways of symmetry and profile angles.
But I did draw something new that I am loving and I absolutely must get your opinion on. (unless you hate furs) I'll probably upload the sketch over the next few days.

Oh no -- I've got a couple of furry pieces I need to put up here, as a matter o' fact. Show me what you've got.

Yeah, it's kinda like your dough analogy. The main difference is that the fermentation comes from putting in the required practice time. Let's work on the furry piece together - it's the purr-fect (I just couldn't resist) opportunity to practice your anatomy chops! ^_^

Haha, nice.
Yeah, lemme try to get it up sometime today, I'm out of town with my bro right now. So I'll look to getting it up when we aren't running around town.

That sounds like a plan, thanks!!!

Thank you, Luayne! I really appreciate that.

I just checked out your gallery - really nice work you have there. I'm really starting to make use of the "slippery" oil-like quality of Photoshop's settings, and it looks like you've mastered them well!

Thanks to you, too
Your gallery is also worth a watch. I guess the main difference between our pictures is that you work with lines and I don't :] Maybe if you leave them out you'd have this "slippery" oil-like feeling, too.

But I CAN'T leave my lines! They give my life MEANING!!! ^_^

Haha
Well then... don't want to make your life meaningless, so you have further permission to use them ^_^

Thank you! (bows deeeeeeeply)

I do, however, find myself strangely drawn (aaarrgghhh!) to this "painterly" aspect of digital art...

LuisaPreissler In reply to newtman001 [2009-10-10 21:51:48 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome

Hm, seems like a great dilemma to me. Just that I get you right, you are tormented by wanting to draw in a painterly fashion and see the meaning in life in drawing linearts?
Maybe you could draw a lineart and make two versions of it? You just colour the first one and paint over the second?

You're welcome, though I have to ask why you need it now? It sounds a bit desperate... are you in some kind of art depression?

Actually, yes. It's gone on for years, and only now am I finally seeing positive change.

I'm sorry - I didn't realize it showed so much.

LuisaPreissler In reply to newtman001 [2009-10-15 18:40:23 +0000 UTC]

You don't have to be sorry. I guess everyone feels like that from time to time, there are days (actually almost every day) when I feel like my ideas and skills just aren't good enough. Until last year I painted a picture only every half a year because I was so demotivated. Then my first semester at University and all the circumstances were so bad that I started painting out of frustration again. It was a good method to concentrate on another thing that hadn't something to do with my actual problems and I regained the joy in painting

I understand that. I came to call it "The Rule of What You're Not Supposed to Do." Even now it manifests - I'd rather be working on a personal project than completing an assignment. *sigh* Go figure.

Thank you for the encouragement! The more I work, the more I want to work again. Though it may not show, I'm very happy for that development. Also, finally getting into deviantArt, instead of just letting my gallery sit idle, has been great therapy for me. I'm finally attracting fellow artists who I encourage, and who encourage me in return (present company included).

I'm not where I need to be just yet, but I'm very grateful for how far I have come. Even finding out that I'm not the only one who goes through these mental gymnastics has helped me immeasurably.

Oh, one more thing: You'll soon be seeing the results of reconciling lines and painterly strokes. Stay tuned... ^_^

I don't really know a wise answer to all that, so I just agree! I'm really looking forward to your next picture and enthused to see what you came up with.

Thank you!

There's no need to come up with something pithy. You actually helped me sort out a little dilemma I was having, and I'm grateful for that. I will try not to disappoint you with my next piece... ^_^
