Description On the way back to the car from the warehouse, a couple of buildings became visible from the road. Upon inspection, one turned out to be an abandoned auto shop, the other this decaying house.

Actually this is a mining related building, connected to the grey cinderblock miner's wash house in the background. It's been decades since I explored around there, (I live about 40 minutes from Centralia), but I thought this was a hoist house for the winch of a nearby slope mine. The concrete footings to the right could have been for a small headframe maybe? Interesting to note the more modern concrete addition and the modified doorway, (maybe a transom window bricked up?) The mine's still there I believe, overgrown - lucky you didn't stumble into it. I never wanted to get too close in case the edge gave way.Β

Β Haven't managed to kill myself by falling into anything yet!

Β (Entirely possible, though. Check back weekly for potential death reports.)

Would I be permitted to use this in a manipulation of mine? Full credits of course and links in description.

Β Yup, as long as credit and a link back are given, go right ahead.

Cool, Centralia is an awesome place! Did you check out the Grafitti Highway?

Β I did indeed! I would say that the highway was actually the most interesting part. The abandoned buildings could be abandoned buildings anywhere, but the highway buckling from the fire below and the smoke rising out is immediately recognizable as Centralia.

Indeed. Centralia's surprisingly calm for an abandoned village. I've been to a few abandoned places myself, but none have been as peaceful as Centralia.

I love to explore these kinds of places!

i've been through centralia a week ago and i saw an abandoned garage, but not this building. i believe this was once byrnesville, a victim of centralia's mine fire. was a religious shrine nearby? you were in byrnesville then.

Is the driveway completely covered with leaves or was there ever a driveway to begin with?

Interesting question!

Unfortunately, I don't remember. The presence or lack of a driveway wasn't something that stuck in my mind.

Oh ok. Is that another house in the upper right hand corner?

Huh, good eye. It's not a house, but rather this critter . They form a little cluster, with nothing else on that stretch of road for several miles.

Ooo, that's ruddy marvelous! Old buildings like that are three kinds of awesome. I just wished I lived within walking distance of some... This is a good picture, too; it's nice to see pics of abandoned buildings that people HAVEN'T photoshopped into oblivion. ^^

I seem to not only live within walking distance of a number abandoned houses, I suspect that the structures are following me. There hasn't been one adventure I've gone off on where I could swing a cat (if I were so inclined) without hitting at least one vacated and run-down building.

...and I never touch Photoshop. The only alterations I make to any photograph are to resize 'em and add my signature. I'm trying to create an accurate record of various peculiar locations and doctoring the images would undermine that goal.

Ah, you're lucky. I can only think of two abandonded buildings near where I live, and it would take at least three hours to walk there. I've tried. ((Sighs))

Exactly! I swear, for every unedited photo I find here there's at least three edited ones I can understand if by editing it the photographer is attempting to shield the building from vandals by distorting the picture so it's completely unrecognizable, but still, there is a limit. UrbanAdventures is a wicked site with good unedited pics; I likes it muchly. The guy running that, Panic!, has been to some seriously awesome places. German brickworks = AWESOME.

Well, look on the bright side. With the housing market the way it is, there will undoubtedly be derelict houses all over the place before too long. : p

Hadn't considered the possibility that by posting images (and in some cases, lengthy descriptions) of these places might give hooligans the idea to head out and vandalize the sites in question. Probably something I should keep in mind going forward... (No change to posting unaltered pictures, of course; it's just that I could stand to be a trifle more vague on the exact locations.)

Indeed! ^^

Hmm... 'tis true. One would like to think that people here on dA have a little more decency/respect, but you never know... At least pics here don't show up in image searches from other websites, like Google or Ask.
