Description The second smallest of the horrolophids is cervocephalus. Although not flightless, cervocephalus spend most of their time on the ground similar to a ground hornbill. Cervocephalus are also the fastest running pterosaur in relation to their body size (thanatosopteryx is faster but only because its limbs are longer). Cervocephalus is not quite as closely related to the other genera which is obvious in its smaller size and unique crest. Both genders have a huge crest somewhat reassembling a moose’s antler, although the prongs of the male are typically larger. The long prongs help break up the animal’s silhouette as it stalks through dense and dark underbrush in search of small animals. They also serve as an intimidation display to any potential predators and when a cervocephalus sleeps, its white head camouflages it as a skull which most predators won’t bother touching.
