Description This is artwork created for the Merlin Big Bang story "Reflash" by the wonderful leviathans_moon.

A link to the really super story is here, (Merlin/Arthur NC17)
[link]

This is an acrylic on canvas board created to accompany this part...

Merlin was left with Arthur, who still looked just as sour as he did two minutes ago.

Oh cool! How weird I who thought I'd gone through most of your art and here is something new!

On it's own, without the story, it's really kind of a weird one. Β "Hmmm, Merlin's dressed as a fireman...right........"

Well I've seen so many versions of Merlin in your gallery I sort of run with it by now.. It's awesome that's all that matters... now if you'd make them both as policeofficers someday my day would be made..

Never heard about Hill Street Blues but I think you just gave me a new series to watch. Something more in their direction I think.. between that and Lethal Weapon style.. Does this mean you're considering actually doing it?

It was a series from the eighties, very enjoyable at the time, but I haven't seen it since then and I don't know if it's something that would stand up today. Β It had one of the best ever theme tunes though... Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TmvGk… Β (And I'd forgotten how many cute guys were in it actually...)

I dunno if I'll actually paint Merlin and Arthur as cops though...I might do...I dunno...

Well I rather like old series... even when they get a little dull sometimes.

Well, if you do I'll look forward to it. Otherwivse I'll enjoy whatever you post anyway.

Well, I don't remember it as being dull. Β When I went in search of the theme tune, I saw they actually have lots of episodes on youtube. Β I shall have to go and have a watch and see whether they live up to my memory of them.

Oh cool, I'll have to do the same. I love cop movies.. Seems I have a weekness for the profession in general.

Merlin as a fireman???

It's an illustration to a lovely fanfic where Arthur is a widowed schoolteacher, with a young daughter, whose wife died in a fire.

Merlin is the firefighter he meets and falls in love with.

(And, I don't care how gorgeous you look, it's very hard to make a canary yellow hat look cool... )

That sunds like a great fanfic!!! But Merlin is doing a great job of looking attractive in that hat

He can just about carry off a yellow helmet, but it's not the most flattering colour in the world.

Oh my god! This is amazing! Seriously, the colours are so vivid and crisp. There's usually a loss of definition when paintings are shown online but definitely not this time. And there's so much detail!

I'm always flabbergasted at the things you accomplish with paint. I look at this and it doesn't look busy, it looks like just a really nicely rendered scene between the two, then I remember it's a painting and I look at all the shading, and the grating on the bus and it's windows, and the different shades and textures and I realize it's actually a really busy picture, it just doesn't *look* like it.

I have to constrantly remind myself that this is acrylic because I so often forget. This is definitely one of your better ones. Merlin and Arthur both look so unamused. Made me giggle. When I have time I'll have to read the story.

Thank you very much.

I'm really glad you think it didn't look too busy, yeah, it could well have done, there're an awful lot of different colours and textures and things going on.

Merlin is standing at the corner of the engine. So hopefully all the lines coming from the right and left of him converge on him. So ideally, if your eye drifts off to the background it should be carried back to the central figures rather than just drifting aimlessly around the canvas. (or that's the theory anyway. )

It's pretty.

Oh yeah, definitely focused on Merlin. Like I said, it wasn't until the artist in me smacked me around and went "Look closer!" that I noticed the absolute insanity (in a good way) that went into the background. The angle of the bus window just draws right into his face (look at me acting like I know what I'm talking about, it does though, lol).

Thank you. Merlin's outfit was great fun to paint, especially the reflections on the helmet and the glass on that torch thing.

I think most people have a soft spot for a nice looking man in a uniform. Yum! (Though, wonderful as firemen are, the design of the helmet is a bit dorky. )

oh wow!! I love their expressions on this pic, and you can well see Arthur's annoyance for being with poor Merlin who seems to be in abeyance, not knowing what to do, except holding his breath. All the features of their faces are remarkable. And I love how you painted the creases of their outfits, it's so perfect. Awww Merlin, I really want to do unforbidden things to him right now, you made him so...yummy :3

Aww thank you. I find painting men's suits really hard, I find it very difficult to make the smooth fabric down the front of the jacket, and the sleeves of the suit work right. (I wish guys today would go back to wearing elizabethian or renaissance clothes or something, much easier to paint. )

No worries then, you succeeded entirely!!! : D
Awww you're so right! I sooo think the same! each time I say that to people, they look at me as if I'm a lion who escaped from the zoo! like "What!?!?" XDD But yeah, these fashions, Victorian fashions and all, look so beautiful on men :3
I just remember how James McAvoy is dressed up in 'Becoming Jane'! *O*

ObsidianSerpent In reply to flomacaroon [2012-08-24 17:23:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, most old fashioned clothing is so flattering to men, they just look so GOOD in a frock coat/waistcoat etc.

I think it all went a bit wrong with the suit in the 1950's. (1940's suits are actually still quite nice, but after 1950 they seem really ugly to me.)

I like the new Goth styles and whatnot that young men are wearing now. But for older guys, and for men who work in offices, the styles are really dull/unflattering.

I saw an interview with Benedict Cumberbatch recently, who is good friends with McAvoy. He said that James told him how he was just walking along...I think it was Oxford Street...and a HUGE strange man just suddenly ran over to McAvoy and picked him up completely off the ground and licked his face, and then put him down again.

Apparently the man was a fan, and got a bit over-excited.

Made me laugh. (Though I wouldn't like it to happen to me. *G*)

Lool true! the 50s were the beginning of the end XD

Yeah, some of the gothic cloths for men have some similarities with the Victorian fashion, but I really hate goth shoes though, they're huge and withe metal and all o_O lol

WHAAAAAAAAAAT!!! XDD oh my god poor James!! poooor James! Gimme the interview!! I'm gonna scroll down tumblr, it might be there, oh my poor thing!!! a huge strange guy licking his face!! O I'm picturing a huge strange man licking his face as a huge St Bernard dog would lick a human's face, but it might just be a kiss, am I right? because just licking the entire face! ... O.O this is strange indeed!!! so many strange things happen at the present all around me lol unbelievable!! it's accumulating XD

ObsidianSerpent In reply to flomacaroon [2012-08-25 07:47:32 +0000 UTC]

I actually really like the gothic boots with all the metal and the New Rock shoes. I like the steampunk look, so to me it edges the victorian clothes into that.

The incident with the guy licking James was something that Cumberbatch said in an interview with the Radio Times. I'll scan it into my LJ and post it there so you can see exactly what he said...

(It does sound a bit St Bernard-y to be honest. )

oh yeah! steampunk really rocks! and yes, they look like Victorian fashion styles!!!

Can't wait to see the happenings!

British fireman outfits just aren't sexy like American fireman outfits, I think it's the shape of the yellow helmet. But Merlin would look cute in it anyway.
