Wow that is impressive.


Experience in ksp tells me that having the diameter of the second stage that much smaller than the payload and the first stage itself disaster. If only there was a way for me to contact and warn ULA that this configuration is not safe without at least 4 struts placed radially connecting the top of the first stage to the centaur stage/cst-100 service module adapter.

Fortunately, ULA can design struts into their adapters! (part clipping!)  Though the Centaur is pressure-stabilized (balloon tank) so its pretty sturdy for a thin metal frame covered with foam and a few stiffeners!

Also, the Atlas V is like that because the original Centaur was 3 meter diameter, but they needed a 4-meter diameter core to hold more fuel, for the transition from Atlas III to V.
