Description Horse, Follow Closely

"The essence of a horseman, both his skill and intuition, goes beyond the hours he spends in the saddle." - Horse, Follow Closely by GaWaNi Pony Boy

Title chosen from a Native American Horsemanship book my grandma got years and years ago and used to train Destiny's aunt, only found it fitting that because this picture was taken on the ranch in which Destiny and her aunt (along with Destiny's grey uncle most of you know of, and Destiny's mother) were born on, that I use it.

This picture is of a little palomino Pony our friends had their for who knows what. Some people sent him over to see if they could get him ridden down some, but they have too many others to work on an unpaid horse where they had no idea if he was even properly broke. So, my friend decided to get him out and do a join-up with him, and then her mom, who is planning on getting certified for training, rode him around (he wasn't very well trained XD). This was taken toward the middle of the session, after he started listening to her motions and body movement.

When she started saddling him up in there, he actually would take the leg wraps and bell boots and flip them up with his lip, and when she'd reach up to grab it, he'd drop it. It was soooo cute and had us all laughing. But yeah, figured I'd upload this, I love the effect his falling, long forelock gives the picture life, so I knew I wanted to leave that in there. I have a lot more pictures of him that I might upload as stock later on. He was a cutie though.

"Just as the native amiercan rider's ability to communicate with horses was nothing short of spectacular, so was the horse's ability to interpret commands given on an instant's notice." - Horse, Follow Closely, GaWaNi Pony Boy

Na, I like them gold with a lot of shine The Frenchmans Guy bloodline (and Sun Frost bloodline in general) tend to be really golden.

Frenchman... They gotta be dark-ish, not too dark, but perfect with a high metallic sheen/shine. A lot like this: [link]

YES! I like them a few shades lighter than that as well. I'll have to see if I can track down the one stallion I REALLY liked that was out of Frenchman.

Big mama That's parents for ya Parents are awesome at some times- like when they help you up when you fall- but maybe not at others- like when they get in your face about 'not being prepared'.

My mom actually didn't teach me to ride, my grandma did She never got after me about not being prepared or anything, just told me to dust off and get back on (hence why I was busting up when my gelding flung me over his shoulder after a random bucking spree and meeting with a fence, I literally sat there laughing while he ran off, my grandma looked at me like I was crazy ) But my grandma can be a little old school, though she's definitly gentler because she does use the Native American methods (which work VERY well! I've used them for 4 of the 5 horses in my backyard and we're unstoppable pairs. I've used it on both geldings, who go to the end of the world and back with me, on Bec, who's heart has to be 10x bigger than the average horses because she's such a sweet old gal, and then even Destiny, who has put all her trust into me as a leader with only about 12 weeks of owning her). But yeah, I've always kinda been the little girl who would bond with her horses and kick the adults butts. My Paint and I had won 2 saddles by the time I was what, 11 or 12 years old, and he was maybe 5-6 years old by that time, so yeah, I'd definitly say the Native American way is thee way to go XD Prevents a lot of problems, including bucking issues....

I pretty much taught myself to ride, because nobody in my family cares about horses. At all. Even my own grandmother tried to talk me out of liking horses and riding -_-
Anyways, I had a riding instructor, who taught me the basics (posture, tips, and whatnot) and I friggin LOVE HER. And the we moved. Her horse was..ahh....special I was posting, and she randomly stopped and screamed at the top of her lungs at her buddy She picked up the trot again like nothing happened I was cracking up so bad I fell off and was still laughing on the ground
I use Native American methods, too What sucks is that I always lease horses, I've never owned one >> So when I do own one myself, I'm joining the AQHA and getting meh some points! Native American calms horses so they're just like: Alright, whatever. I haven't had a horse buck or crowhop or anything since I started using it

My grandma never taught me anything about posture or that sorta thing, probably because in barrels, it's more about balance than posture I know when I was about 10 or 11, I started using rubberbands to keep my feet in the stirrups, and then the club outlawed them, so I had to learn to ride without stirrups. I've had judges and arena directors at rodeos come up to my grandparents and give me props for it because most the girls there wouldn't be able to turn a barrel much less weave all the poles and run home without falling off.

What a funny horse! We had one pinto gelding I was competing in a Extreme Cowboy Race on, and we're heading for a jump, then we are running out of the "arena" (it was a lot, but they left the gate open when I went in to run the course) and toward his buddy. He didn't want to go back in but somehow, even though the clock was still running, I was able to make up my time lost and take 1st place That was a crazy day...

See, I was a member of APHA about 5 or 6 years ago, but I've yet to renew and I've never owned a AQHA before Destiny (like personally paid for and owned, usually my grandparents own the QHs and therefore put them under their name), but I'll probably register her under my name before next year. I'd really like to register her with the Pinto Asso. because the AQHA horses tend to be bred more for barrels, where as Paints and Pintos tend not to be, but either way, I think in AQHA she could pull off being a Superhorse contender, she's just very willing and open to anything when I'm working with her. She's a weebit different with everyone else. Like one of our friends (who was drunk, which isn't uncommon for him) decided to get on her while I'd left to grab something, and the look on Destiny's face was priceless. He tried walking her around and she started trotting, so I told him what to do and she started slowing down and walking. It was pretty priceless though because she had no idea who just got on her....

I learned to ride without a saddle once I decided on a specific type of riding (that would be western). I use rubber bands at first, and then I stopped because I had pretty good balance But my instructor said if you have good posture means I would have good balance, and taught me how to 'move with my horse'. She said that balance is everything, too, so I was a little confused A lot of girls I knew were jealous, cause they couldn't run barrels or weave poles and stay in the saddle

Don't you just love horses? They're all so awesome! My cousin has a colt that kisses me.. literally. I say 'Can I have a kiss?' and he puckers his lips and kisses me :iconlaugingplz:

I think what I wanna do is find a calm, decent quarter horse stallion or mare, and show him/her in hunter under saddle, barrels, and poles Maybe western pleasure, but a lot of WP horses develop back problems I'm gonna raise mah own money, though, I'm not letting anybody else pay for my horse

And I have known some pretty weird horses One mare was pretty much only ridden by me, and my dad went to mount her and she freaked. Her face was hilarious I wish I'd gotten it on camera

painted-cowgirl In reply to Horsechik4evr [2012-10-28 22:00:47 +0000 UTC]

I have pretty insane balance if I can say so myself I'll run barrels or poles bareback and I've done a full reining pattern bareback (spins, slides, everything). I've had a lot of close calls like hanging off the side of the saddle, but I pulled myself back into the saddle and took off running to get a time, everyone couldn't stop talking about the save-of-a-lifetime, it was pretty cool though I didn't even place last!

Horses are in every little nook of my heart and soul. Without them, I'd go insane, and I've had it before where I couldn't ride and I just went a wee bit off the deep end My reining and queen horse gives kisses and hugs to little kids. Like little kids are his favorite things in the world, it's so strange

See with my mare I just got, I put in about 1,200, and my parents paid the rest (total was 3,500). I don't have a job or anything, so it's hard to even raise as much as I did...took me about 6 months though, but it was birthday and holiday time

Ahh, we're so awesome I can run barrels tackless in shorts and reining! I guess we both are exceptional equestrians I was hanging sideways from the saddle with my foot stuck in the stirrup and my horse running full speed around barrels, but I managed to pull myself up and run home with out breaking my neck . Now, that was scary >>

Same here! I can't find anything in my heart or soul or even my house that has nothing to do with horses I would go absolutely insane without them If I couldn't see them, smell them, feel them, I'd kill myself. My riding instructer's horse would lick kids' faces It was adorable

I was thinking of finding one (let it be the will of God) for around 1,000, 3,000 tops. I'm looking around and asking mah horse peoples Crossing mah fingers. It's jut one of those things that you ask for for Christmas and your birthday for your entire life, but you never get it

You don't wanna hear the accidents I've been in. I've nearly broke my back and then my legs multiple times...it explains why my body is so messed up though...

If you are wanting one to ride, it'll be a bit harder, but I know at auctions you can find a good one every now and then. 2 of our 5 are from auctions and we've had a lot in the past from auctions. Occassionally you'll find a good one, but know what your looking for and take your trainer (or another experienced horse person) with you to make sure the horse isn't drugged and is actually broke to ride and sound minded.

Horsechik4evr In reply to painted-cowgirl [2012-10-29 23:31:00 +0000 UTC]

It's cause horses are irresistible. Some people only think they're stupid horses. Equestrian know they're 1400 pounds animals that could kill you with a single blow, but they love you more than anything else. Equestrians risk it all for an animal that means everything to them. I speak the truth.

I think I'm gonna ask around and see if I can breed and raise the foal on my own Most of the time auctions have horses who look perfect in the ring, but then they get home and something's wrong. Like a horse who spooks at dogs or one who stall weaves or worse At auctions, you can't really check the horse for medical problems

painted-cowgirl In reply to Horsechik4evr [2012-10-29 23:35:16 +0000 UTC]

1400? Mine weigh probably more between 1000-1200 But yeah, I get ya. It's kinda like I tell people my horse and I are a team, we put our trust in each other and love the same thing, without each other, we could never get where we are.

Just be aware that if you raise a foal it'll cost a LOT more than you think. Food, Farrier, Vet, all that stuff adds on before you can start even riding them. Then, if you don't have a trainer (I wouldn't recommend training your first foal by yourself), you'll have to pay for training, which can get rather costly...and you'd be surprized, most auction horses you can ready pretty easily if you've been around horses enough, and if you can talk to the owner/trainer that's even better (so long as you can tell they're telling the truth).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Horsechik4evr In reply to painted-cowgirl [2012-10-29 23:50:17 +0000 UTC]

That's because we are a team! It doesn't take 6 or more people to make a team! Nor do we have an off season like most sports. And I agree, it's like we put everything in each other, and the best things happen

And I know it I just can't ever find any good horses where I live, and I don't wanna pay for shipping over two states >>
And the next time I can get in touch with my friend (cuz we moved) I'm gonna see if he knows anybody or knows of any auctions I think that's the best chance I have

Oh yes! Best team sport ever

That's the sucky part. I know here, a few months back my grandma was at an auction and a guy couldn't afford to keep his show arabians and no one wanted them (broke to ride, had show records, gorgeous western pleasure type horses), and he couldn't even sell them for $100. I think he just left them there because he couldn't afford to feed them...
