Description A little sketchbook doodle from almost two months ago that I forgot to scan.

Iralbe ranting to Morri trying to understand the dogs’ concept of gender binary. I assume Morri gave them a hug right after.

oh no iralbe got a tumblr...

why would they be confused though? I thought they were aware their status as whispering one was due to a deformity that made them sterile, it's not much not understanding "gender binary" but functional reproductive anatomy, which most crater hounds seem to have just like the dogs do, so why the confusion?

sorry if I offend anyone^^" I just don't like gender, I think it's just sexist stereotypes and I assumed so far that wurr had no genders, as neither the dogs nor hounds seemed sexist

Bluedramon In reply to hyaenida [2018-03-04 01:21:18 +0000 UTC]

I imagine Irable is mostly upset that dogs only see strictly two genders (male and female) and no nonbinary/intersex. There's no word for them to use without accidentally identifying themself as male or female, neither of which are accurate for them.

"dogs are healthy"
.....clearly you've not seen how we tend to breed dogs with little regard to their health.. (See: brachycephilic dogs that can't breathe and overheat, bulldogs..well everything.., cavilier king charles spaniels with brains to big for their skulls and causing them severe pain and problems, great danes lifespan of 6 years or less, etc. )

I think a fair argument that these "mutants" would be just as healthy if not more so than many a current dog breed. Certainly far far healthier than a standard bulldog. (And this also has nothing to do with gender binary.)

I'm talking specifically about dogs in this story.

I dont see how human dog breeding practices effect a universe with no humans (unless im wrong about that part)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Falconsong In reply to CrossDevice [2018-03-04 07:48:55 +0000 UTC]

Without humans dogs wouldn't exist, ergo there is likely to be the same dog breeds and the problems that accompany those breeds by the nature of their existence. Dogs exist because humans made them. I know I've seen dog breeds in this comic that exist in the real world. Saluki, for example. Which have a high high rate of heart disease. Not nearly as unhealthy as a brachycephalic dog, however. You can't divorce a breed from it's health problems. That's unrealistic, even in fiction and a good fiction will often make the characters not perfect, so no, "dogs are healthy" is incorrect, in fictional worlds and even more so in real world.

However, world creation aside, I honestly take more umbrage with your implication that having whispering ones, or gender non-binary ones, is "screwed up".Β  That's a load of, pardon, bullshit. Kindly keep that sentiment to yourself. This gender is binary view is fucked up and implying someone who is gender or sexually non-binary (like Iralbe or like my transgendered friends or someone who is intersexed) as "screwed up" is a disgusting and ill educated view. Kindly refrain.

Paperiapina In reply to Falconsong [2018-03-04 13:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Humans do not and have never existed in the world of Wurr, and real life dog breeds do not exist in it either. Soo is not a saluki, he is a southerner, with a southerner's body type (slender build, short fur, long legs, big ears, all to dispel heat as they are people from warm climate), he just happens to have floppy ears.

(Besides dog breeding in its modern form is relatively recent thing, like hundred years ago many nowdays sick breeds were actually functional. I've seen photos of what pugs used to be, and they had honest to goodness muzzles! If modern dog breeds the way you described them existed in Wurr, there would have to be a lot more signs of humans, like cities and stuff, and I have no interest in writing post apocalyptic stories. I'm having plenty of fun playing with neolithic culture instead.)

Wurr is first and foremost a fantasy story, and any possible likeness to a real life dog breed exists to make the characters visually recognizeable by the readers.

I dont see how you missed the correlation of response.

The orig commenter said nb people are mutants and dogs are healthy and non mutated, the responder corrected then on their misinformation about how they think dogs are healthy perfect specimens that arent bred or exist with mutations.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

CrossDevice In reply to KryptikSpook [2018-03-04 04:13:59 +0000 UTC]

They were talking about the mutant dogs, not people. And given the context, most likely the dogs in the comic.

And my point is since humans don't appear to exist here, the dogs in this setting most likely came about naturally.Β

Also going from the mutants having to prevent some of their kin from breeding to avoid stillbirths or birth-defects incompatible with life, I think the dogs are canonically healthier too

dmlp103 In reply to CrossDevice [2019-10-23 02:40:03 +0000 UTC]

Dogs existed before people and alongside them, we have plenty a wild dog species that do fine without us having bred them(African painted, and dhole being two examples).

CrossDevice In reply to dmlp103 [2019-10-23 20:34:58 +0000 UTC]

I think thats the point I was trying to make, any dog species in the comic would have come about naturally and probably won't have the health issues associated with human created breeds

While I agree on how humans have screwed up breeding of most any animal, in the universe of WURR this has zero correlation unless you believe that all German shepherds breed with other pure german shepherds and not with other breeds of dogs.Β  The dogs in WURR may still have some minor mutated genes just as any naturally wild animal without human interference may in real life (such as albino or coat/eye color) but those are not unhealthy.Β  The hounds or mutants, are typically unhealthy mutations to the point of their leaders determine if they are healthy enough to be able to breed or have offspring.Β  In this universe they are considered unhealthy in that regard.Β  The original commenter gave no indication that they were talking about anything in real life and to say they said nb people are mutants is way off course.Β  Especially since the "mutants" they were referring to were the two hounds pictured who are technically mutants in this universe and come from a different land that is toxic and causes the hounds to be mutated as well as the already preexisting mutated genes of the parents.

I love this, poor irable feeling confused and upset about this haha.

I am curious, do whispering ones have their own pronouns outside of the ussual he, she, and they, or do they typically select one or choose a pronoun at random whenever they need one as they get older?Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Paperiapina In reply to whirlawind [2018-03-03 21:54:36 +0000 UTC]

Since Wurr is primarily written in Finnish (my mother tongue), I always imagined the hound language work the same way Finnish does, so gender specific pronouns just plain do not exist. Much simpler for everybody, specially as the hounds don't see gender as a binary in the first place.Β

The he/she/they in the comic is just for the benefit of the non-Finnish readers who are stuck with the English translation (and for my headache).Β

whirlawind In reply to Paperiapina [2018-03-03 23:40:46 +0000 UTC]
