Description 'Who is this? And what is here?
And in the lighted palace near
Died the sound of royal cheer;
And they crossed themselves for fear,
All the knights at Camelot;
But Lancelot mused a little space
He said, 'She has a lovely face;
God in His mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shalott.'
-Alfred Lord Tennyson (1843)

I wanted to do this piece forever, something different than the usual dead girl in the boat usually associated with this part of the poem. Really just a practice piece, done between working on a contest piece that is taking me forever. This was just supposed to be a quick study illustrating a line from the poem by Tennyson, but ended up taking me much longer. Painted all in Photoshop LE with a Wacom tablet, I spent a very long time on this, most of it on her clothing. (Some of you might say, but she has no clothing. That's because I used a special brush to paint the delicate lace and embroidery work on her dress. It can only be seen by those that are good and pure of heart...oh, wait. That's another tale.) I really did spend a lot of time on the clothes, but never could get them to come out the way I wanted, so I just left them off. (You can comment on the clothing if you want to confuse the folks that don't read the descriptions.)

Seriously, comments and critiques are appreciated.

Thank you.
I'm actually listening to the song right now. I always liked the poem, but it really came to life for me when I heard Mckennit's song version.

I love this very much, the soft muted colors (something that I use very much as well). It is beautifully painted and this is definitely great example for you amazing abilities as an artist.

It looks great. You're getting better with every picture. I love the details... the cross and her lips are awsome.
You should work a little bit more on the shading on her skin.

OMG! The lace - it's stunning! ^_^

Great idea and lovely execution, too. I was always confused - was she supposed to be Christian or Pagan? I really love how you did her jewelry, though.

Thank you.
I was never clear either on whether she was a Christian or Pagan. A magic mirror and curse and at one point in the poem, the people refer to her as a fairy, so I am not sure, but though Arthurian legend had a lot of magic most of the characters had strong religious Christian backgrounds, leanings, and motivations. In Waterhouse's famous painting of her, he has a crucifix and candles in the front of her boat, which is why I included it in this.

Thanks as well for reading the description. While it hasn't happened to me too much, I've seen people ask 'What program did you use or what does this or that mean?' when it is spelled out clearly in the description.

beautiful work. I know it's practice as you say, but I think maybe after you're done the contest work, you might end up revisiting this and add those special touches to complete it... mostly though the face, especially, is quite wonderful. Great to see your work as always darlin! And can't wait to see the contest piece!! What is it??

The contest piece is mermaids/sirens, done with a nod to Waterhouse. The ocean is taking me forever however. So I really need to step up the work to get it done in time for *Eireen 's contest.
