Description Last but certainly not least, to round out my planetary roster I have Neptune. His design is some sort of cross between an absent-minded nerd/scientist (which he is) and an old sea captain (because of Neptune's namesake).

Name: Neptune Poseidon Galaxy

Celestial Body: Neptune

Gender: Male (he/him)

Orientation: Demiromantic Asexual

Age: 4.5 billion

Birthday: Celebrated on September 23

Place of Birth: Protoplanetary disk

Occupation: Member of the Solar System Squad

Relatives: Sun (father), Mercury (brother), Venus (sister), Earth (sibling), Mars (brother), Jupiter (brother), Saturn (brother), Uranus (twin brother), Triton (test subject–I mean adopted son), other Neptunian Moons (children)

Significant Other(s): None

Physical Appearance: 226 cm (7’5”) tall. Ectomorph, but with some muscle mass, enough to be visible. Round, slightly oval face. Dark brown skin tone with cool undertones, more reddish than yellowish. Round, slightly droopy teal eyes. Large, round, and wide nose. Curly deep blue hair with white streaks that reaches past his shoulders, and stubble. Usually wears a medium blue to medium dark blue shirt, slightly bluish white pants, a dark red belt that is thin except for a section in the middle where it becomes thicker, bluish gray boots, a white bow tie with light blue edges, and a coat with stripes in various shades of blue, navy blue buttons, and dark blue pockets.

Personality: “There is no magic. There are only natural phenomena we do not currently have explanations for.”

Neptune hides away from others, rarely interacting with planets closer to the Sun besides Uranus.  But that’s not because he’s shy. On the contrary, Neptune is more than willing to chat about his work, but he’s so busy collecting data that he doesn’t take time to present it. It comes as a surprise, but Neptune is actually quite friendly. He’ll chat for hours about his hobbies or his life, yet will take the time to listen. He wants to learn everything he can about how the world works, and that includes his friends. Neptune even asks invasive questions because he’s just that curious. Contrasting Uranus’ dramatic way of speaking, Neptune is direct and great at explaining. Though he can get caught up in his research, and sacrifices self-care, he never forgets to care for those around him. Which is helpful, given that the Sun isn’t available to answer every cry for help. Neptune’s passion for math causes him to see people’s behavior in terms of math, and he often fails to understand emotion. He sometimes crosses ethical boundaries in the name of research, something that has given him a reputation, but more on that later. He cannot tolerate secrecy, and forces people to reveal uncomfortable things about themselves or risk his wrath. He doesn’t get angry easily, but when upset he not only becomes enraged, but manipulative. He’ll force people to do what he wants and wear them down when they don’t obey. Neptune’s interests are math and physics, and he dabbles in meteorology too (especially when it involves the math of probability). When he was young and the Solar System was still forming, he was fascinated with the Kuiper belt, and would experiment on its denizens, often with questionable consent involved. He trapped objects in resonances as an attempt to tame their orbits. He even managed to capture a Kuiper belt object, not caring that the capture destroyed his previous moon system. Triton still fears his adopted father will experiment on him, and views him more as a test subject than a son. His reputation with the Kuiper belt is even worse, even if his days of unethical experimentation are mostly over. Neptune claims Saturn of all planets coerced him into the whole thing, and Saturn’s response is to either deny everything or blame Jupiter.

Design Notes: Neptune might be the shortest of the giant planets, but what he “lacks” for in height (he’s still 7’5”) he makes up for in body mass. He’s the least skinny and most muscular of the giant planets, as Neptune is the densest of the four. (Yet he’s still much skinnier than any of the terrestrial planets.) His shapes are dominated by straight lines and angles like Uranus, but he is more angular and less square, as his quirks tend to be more evident. Like all giant planets his coat represents the planet’s thick atmosphere, with the pattern of stripes reflecting the patterns of Neptune’s cloud tops. His coat design is most similar to Saturn’s, with less defined stripes that are similar in color. The exact placement of the stripes changes in real time as the cloud patterns on Neptune change. Each pocket is a dark storm like the famous Great Dark Spot, though that particular pocket is long gone. His coat’s buttons are navy blue both to represent storms and because Neptune is named for the Roman god of the sea. The electric blue lining on the bottom of the coat is Neptune’s mandatory reference to auroras and the planet’s magnetic field. The aurora reference is fair from his “poles” (feet and head) because Neptune’s magnetic field is tilted significantly from its axis of rotation. Neptune’s blue and white hair also references the planet’s clouds. His teal eyes are the dominant color of Uranus’ color scheme, just as Uranus has dark blue eyes. Uranus and Neptune are structurally and chemically very similar planets. Again, like all jovian planets, Neptune’s shirt, pants, and boots represent the planet’s molecular hydrogen layer, mantle, and core. See Uranus for how these articles of clothing appear for ice giants specifically. Neptune’s bow tie represents the Scooter, another cloud feature visible to Voyager 2 when it passed Neptune in 1989. His belt, like the planet’s rings, is dark and unremarkable except for being thicker in the middle, as if part of it was cut away on the edges. This represents the arcs in Neptune’s rings.

I have previously said that Pluto will have to wait, but I ended up pitying the poor ice ball so much that you'll hopefully be getting him sooner. After that it's back to Elemental sketches.
